Sloppy Shifter, How to Adjust?
On the 300TD auto shifter, has anybody found so much slop that it is difficult to shift into park? Also all selector positions are one off, and I sometimes have to shift into neutral to defeat the starter interlock.
Can this be adjusted? |

No need to adjust, you just need to replace both plastic bushings -- one on the shift lever (take the console cover off -- one screw under the carpet at rear edge of the wood, pull off the surround around the shifter, lift wood at rear, unhook. Switches, etc come out with wood. Remove cover over shift quadrant, bushing goes in hole in lever) and the other on the tranny lever.
You will probably need to pull the tranny lever to get the bushing in, you do on the W115, W123, and probably W126 anyway. New bushings will cure the sloppy lever. Bet it rattles, too! Peter

Rattles like mad!
Up until about 75 or 80, then everything gets real smooth........
But yeah, drives me nuts, I end up holding it all the time. |

The 300TE is sloppy, the 300D rattles, and the 280 SE is off at the indicator and sloppy. I bought three bushings, so if I ever get time....
Rattle usually is the shift lever end, the slop is usually the tranny end. Peter
