Added cooling system capacity for a 240

Just some info to pass along... I have a nice '77 240D and the origional radiator "Gave it up". I have a '77 300D parts car in the back yard. I took the radiator out of it and the clutch fan. The radiator fits the 240 with NO hose change or shroud change. I am going to try the clutch fan as I think It will take less HP out of the little 240 engine. It also bolts right up. The oil cooler also bolted up to the 300 radiator. I saved the 300 oil cooler to later put it on the 240. I have to take the oil lines off of the 300 eng to make it work.
I would use the 300D non-turbo radiator if I had to buy a new one. Might as well get the extra capacity for the summer time when running the A/C.

After replacing the heater control valve today, I flushed the cooling system and heater core out. I am now using Chevron DELO EC1 pre-mixed coolant. This coolant is used in Big Rigs and has a 600,000mi or 12,000hour life span. I bought it at a petroleum distributor. It is a 50/50 mix with de-ionized water pre packaged. It is approved by ALL of the major engine companies...Caterpilar,Navistar,Cummins,Mack, Detroit Diesel,Ford, and GM. It has a temperature span of -34 to +265 degees F with a 15lb cap. The price is reasonable at $7.50 a gallon for the pre-mix. They also sell a concentrate to mix 50/50 but it wasn't much cheaper once you figured it out.

Is the 240 a Euro car? The only 4 cylinders I've seen without the oil cooler are my two Euro cars.

You shouldn't at all need the larger radiator under any conditions, but it certainly doesn't hurt anything.

Have a great day,

LarryBible, The car is a US model with the small oil cooler. The 300 radiator fit up no problem and the oilcooler fit up in its regular spot. Where I live, it can get pertty hot in the summer so I figure that the extra cooling and oil cooling will help in the summer when I am running the A/C. It is sure alot quieter with the clutch fan. I guess the best reason for trying the bigger radiator was that I didn't have to cough up $275 for a new Behr radiator. Chris

I do not think there is any way Engineers working in Germany could possibly over cool a car which spends its later life in Central Texas ....When we are sitting in traffic with 100 plus degrees ambiant air temp... on black asphalt radiating infrared back up under the car.... and sometimes with cars which have been changed over to 134a refrigerant.... I say any upgrade on (reserve) cooling capacity for my car is mucho welcomed... I will be looking at doing that the next time I have to address the engine compartment....I have already decided to put a catch can which will allow the radiator to be purged of air bubbles....
