Buzzing noise from climate control intake... '97 E300

I get a buzzing noise from where air gets sucked in for the climate control. Been more common lately... Any ideas guys? I thinking the motor that sucks the air needs replacing.

michakaveli,

I get a noise that fits the description you gave, and traced it to the enclosure panels under the engine. The noise would start when I got near 60 or so mph, especially in a cross wind. It sounded exactly like it was coming from those vents in the hood.

I read somewhere in a post on this site that the vents themselves have undergone a design modification to address noises. I mentioned this to the service guys at the local dealership and they did not seem to know anything about such a design change. But they did fix the noise by re-fastening the panel under the engine. Hope this helps, Jim

I'm sorry I was a little vague in my description. I am refering to where the air gets drawn from inside the cabin to monitor the correct temperature. Right in the front overhead lamp cluster, trough the little hole...

You will need a asporator motor/blower soon. I have been replacing a whole bunch of those lately.
It's a little fan in your overhead control panel that draws in
air samples for the acc system to measure temp.
pn# 140 830 00 08 price $89.15
You just drop down the dome lamp panel and this unit is
removed from behind.
Good luck.

Thanks Dr. Dies :-)

How do I remove that panel? Just try to gently pull it down. Is it just snapped in there with a few clips?

Just pop off the 2 clear lenses for the dome lamp bulbs.
on the rear edge (closest to sunroof) there are 2 small notches
with metal retaining clips. pry these 2 tangs back at the same time and pull the rear edge down too.
the panel just clips and pops in. don't force it however,
the metal ring in the headliner will rip out and you will
feel rather silly.
the rest is self explanitory.

I took it apart this afternoon. It was really easy so I had no problems. I saw that the fan blade was covered with dust so I blew it out nicely with my air compressor. Sounds quiet now but I bet I'll need to replace it after a while anyway. Was that part number from Parts Bin or Benz dealer?

Dr. Diesel...

Do you or anyone know what wears ou tin these little motor assemblies? I already bought a new part and installed it and just torre apart the old one, and the motor is a brushless system? What tires these pieces out?

I'm curious to learn how these things work...

Howdy,
I belive the bushing wears down allowing the fan blade to begin
to rub against the housing. From what I have seen, it is a fairly
cheezy little motor.
I have had these be noisy in new cars as well as cars with
heavy smoke from owners. (cigar)
I guess it depends on how much magic German plastic they use
when putting these little suckers together.
I hope yours lasts several more years.

Fan Noise

I have tha same car and had the same noise, I fixed by oiling the fan motor. The motor fan is located under the wiper blade assambly, is not that hard to remove but, if you need instruccions I will be glad to send it to you.

We are talking about the aspirator fan in the overhead control
panel. The last time someone I know oiled one up, the temp
resistor failed 10 minutes later.

Hi Guys,

Sorry to drag up an old thread but you guessed it, ... I have a similar problem with a 1998 C200 Classic.

I traced the buzzing to the overhead light panel and removed the large plastic plug in the centre. I put a finger up there and felt some vibration that was making a noise with the cable harness resting on top of the internal parts. Moving the harness a little got rid of the worst noise, but a low-level vibration drone remains.

I figure I can fix this but my problem now is getting the unit out of the roof. There are two slots on either side that I thought might house 'tangs' or similar but I haven't found a way to release the unit yet.

That baby is firmly up there and I don't want to use any force that would cause damage. Any help about removal of the overhead light panel would be much appreciated.
