Mystery Bolt/Pin ??? leaking

Anybody know what this bolt is or why it would be leaking oil? I thought it was a hex head, but its too big for a 5mm too small for a 6mm.

Not sure what it is yet, if nobody answers it by tomorrow morning I'll glance at my car tomorrow. As far as the hex socket, they make 5.5mm.

oh come on! Somebody has to know what this thing is!!
I think its a pin to hold one of the timing chain guides in place, and I was wrong, it doesnt have anything you can get a wrench on. so why is it leaking?

It is a chain rail pin. It is threaded to accept a puller. Not sure of the size but you could probably pull it out JUST A LITTLE BIT (no more then 1/2 an inch) to seal it with some rtv after cleaning it good to remove oil.

thank you!

Now how does this puller thing work? If its just a pin, is it possible that I could just give it a tap with a hammer to re-seat it?

That chain rail pin holds one of the upper timing chain guides in place. I think that is the larger guide that is shaped like an umbrella. The procedure for pulling one of them out is to thread in a bolt through a stack of larger nuts and a flat washer. Tighten the bolt against the washer and the rail pin will slide out.
Best to have the valve cover off and the guide secured. Don't want it to drop in there. However this one is easily handled.
If it is leaking you can either use some sealant , or RTV as suggested. It can be pulled out a little and resealed easily. That one is muck easier to pull out than the lower ones.
Not sure if an umbrella is an accurate description, but you will know it when you see it.

The correct puller is nothing more than a small slide hammer. With some creative engineering you could make one with a small bolt. Maybe pry against the bolt head using something sturdy nearby as a fulcrum?

You got good advice, but you should know that if you pull that pin out too far, one of the timing chain guide rails will come loose and cause some serious problems unless you first pull the valve cover and chain tensioner to get everything back in place.

I just thought that you should know how important it is that you NOT pull the pin out very far.

Secondly, I have NEVER seen one of these leak significantly. It might could leak a tablespoonful per 100,000miles. I would just wipe it off every once in awhile and sleep well.

Good luck,

Uh Oh!

I pulled the pin the whole way. I listened carefully, no noises, and the thing slid really easily, so I figured it couldnt hurt. Went back in just fine. Runs same as always.

What could I have done? And how would I know, and how would I fix it?

Paul

ps. it was a significant enough leak to make a mess.

The only way to make sure the part that pin holds has not come loose is to pull the valve cover and check. It will be easily seen and you can wiggle it to see that it is still in place.
That being said, I pulled the valve cover off an old engine I have in the garage last night and the 'umbrella' guide that pin secures was very tight in there.
I doubt it would drop with the pin pulled out, so long as there was nothing else going on, like starting up the engine, or what ever.

isnt there another bolt at the top of the rail that also holds it? the reason I went ahead a pulled it is because it had almost no resistance indicating that the rail was being held by something else as well. Like I said, it started fine and I just drove it 5 miles. Wouldnt this have showed up and destroyed the engine almost immediately if there was a problem? Or at least another odd noise.

That was the only thing holding that part in place, besides that it is wedged in there failry tightly. Those chain guides and rails are set up to rock on the pins with the movement of the timing chain, so they are not set up in there too rigidly.
