What manual transmission fluid should be used for 1981 240D?
Dear friends:
According to Haynes manual, the proper fluid for this car's manual transmission is Type A ATF. However, it seems that some people here either use REGULAR engine oil (what grade?) or even gear oil (90). So what's the best fluid to be used for a 1981 240D's manual transmission? Thank you. Best regards, Eric |

Best bet, type A ATF, or you could even use Mobile One ATF.

Dont use motor oil or 90w. I use synthetic ATF. It only takes a couple quarts so its not much of an expense but regular ATF will work fine. ![]()

Of all the manual trans lubes I have tried RedLine MTL is the best. While everything else did the job the RedLine product actually felt much slicker and smoother when shifting. You are gonna want regular MTL not MTL 90. www.redlineoil.com RT

was having trouble shifting the manual transmission in my 240d. did a search and was impressed by the passionate plea of mr. bible to use 10w-30 motor oil. po had used gear oil. a drain and fill with the above mentioned motor oil solved my shifting woes. that was 20k miles ago. fyi.
