quick question about a W126

1984 300SD

1. do these cars have LSD?

2. around what rpm should the engine be when u are cruising on the highw at 60MPH? (i am paranoid that mine is a lil high)

3. how often should u use diesel purge?

4. does any normal steering wheel cover found at common car places fit mercedes?

these been bugging me for a while, thanks

1) Not in US trim.

2) Haven't driven it in a while so I don't remember. A little over 2000rpm I think.

3) It's practical to do it with every main fuel filter change so you have something to fill the new filter so you minimize priming time. Some folks fill the new filter with what's in the old filter but I'm clumsy so there's more on the driveway than in the old filter when it's finally out of the car. I think the main filter interval is 30K miles.

4) Depends on what normal means. An SD steering wheel is bigger and thicker than most steering wheels. Places like www.************************ sell leather covers made to fit MB steering wheels.

There's a picture of a covered steering wheel in this thread:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?threadid=66721

The steering wheel in a 79 300CD is similar in diameter and thickness to the steering wheel in an 84 300SD.

My '84 300SD (only had her two weeks now) revs about 2700-2750 for 60 mph. If I go to 3000rpm, I'll be doing about 70.

Any idea how cool she should be while motoring? My indicator usually shows a tad above 80 degrees C.

I watched my tach on the way home last night. I can't get up to 60 on the roads I take, but did get up to 55 for a bit, and it was probably about 2500 rpm. I think your right, 60 would be somewhere about 2700 or 2800 rpm. Guess depends if your coasting, pulling a hill, going into a headwind, ect.
My temp runs between 80 and 90 when cruising without the A/C. If I pull a grade with the A/C on in hot weather, it'll sneak up to about 100 until I let off. I've heard though that it's not supposed to get that hot. I need to check my thermostat I guess.

On my 1983 300sd....

....2,700 rpm at 60 mph, 3,000 rpm at 65 mph, 4,600 rpm in third at 69 mph for a full throttle, pedal-to-the-metal shift from third to fourth, which is just on the first dot of the three dots on the speedometer. That's how I adjusted it using these instructions.

Car is fitted with stock 195/70 R14 tires on 14" wheels. Readings are with a/c off.

Rickg,

No need to check you thermostat. Its normal for the engine to heat up going up a hill because its burning more fuel. Its the same as if you ran up a hill you would get a lot warmer than running on the level. After 80C your thermostat is wide open and not affecting the engine temperature.

Now if it were to heat up in normal driving or when idleing, you might have as thermostat that is opening at a temperature too high, but if it normally runs about 80C, you have no problem. So if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Notice where the red mark is on your temp gage. Its safe to run up to this temperature in hot weather and up hill with no damage to the engine as long as it full of coolant and doesn't boil. As soon as you top the hill and start downhill, your engine should cool to about 80C.

Ned , I call her Goldie but I don't think that they used MB color when it was repainted ,looks more like a honda gold, I plan to paint it when I get a booth built and will sure try and park next to a non repaint before I choose witch Gold to use. In general I don't like MB's with any other paint but MB colors, but do like my Goldies Gold........
