Question Which Differential

Thanks to the forum for being with us during this engine swap deal. As it turns out we're swapping engines, trannies, driveshafts and differentials.

QUESTION:
With a 300 turbo going into a previous 240 slot & its shorter driveshaft as well, which differential would you choose from the following two (remember...it will be a manual tranny)

1. The differential from the totaled 300DT automatic (I know the history of this diff and it was functioning well prior to the accident)

2. The differential from the euro 300 manual parts car (I know that the car sat for one year prior to my dragging it home).

My hunch is to go with the differential from the 300 manual as it was already set up for a 4 speed.

What ratios are stamped into the differential cases? That is, are we choosing from two different final drive ratios?

Which car had the binding differential problem? Was that on the original 240D chassis?

Ken:

Glad you remembered the binding issue. Yes, our thought was that since the back tires wouldn't budge (with calipers off) that it was the differential.
I just crawled out from under the car having punched the axle shafts loose. In addition, I took off the back cover of the differential. The thing is fine. Once the axle shafts were free of the hub, they spun easily. The differential looks clean.
I'm very tempted to bolt it back up and save myself a number of hours ripping the parts car apart.
Of what can be causing the hubs to bind (they move about 1/2 inch only), I have no idea.
Any thoughts?

By the way, I'm following your printed directions for the differential. Makes more sense than Haynes. Appreciate the time you took to type it up.

I figured that there would be some embarrassing moments throughout this project.

Here is the first one. I and a buddy were so focused on the fact that the 240 had sat for a year and hence a probable lockup of wheels that I didn't check for the emergency brake. My brother popped by today and within 2 minutes had located that rather stupid deal.

Makes a guy wonder sometimes.....

Live and learn. The wheels, differential, etc are fine. Project is moving forward.
