new head new noise

REplaced the head on my 85 300 td successfully(?) runs well, and I have what I think is nailing happening. WIll these motors run so well with the cam chain off one tooth? Maybe I skipped a valve adjustment (one of them)
What's next. thanks guys, coleman

Yes it will still run fine with the chain off a tooth in either direction but the engine will sound different.

sound different

turbodeisel,
someone said one tooth is 18 degrees. If that's true it seems like it wouldn't run so well. My marks line up.
anyways, its a moot point as you may have read, I had an injector of a different size mixed in, and that was causing the nailing noise.
thanks

Can't remember which way-

But 1 tooth off in one direction is pistons hitting valves, the other is probably runnable. It should be noticable in terms of power and acceleration.
Have you checked the IP timing? Maybe it's too advanced??

Not that difficult to fix and it's important. Double check it and put your mind at rest. I drove mine with an aftermarket sprocket for 6 months. Car was terrible and timing was out maybe 8-10 degrees. Factory sprocket back in and it's a night/day difference in drivability with the timing dead-on.

Maybe this would be a good time to do Leathermangs dial indecator timing check on #1 valve?? then the other factor would be IP timing.

Leatherman is very adomant about his timing setup.

I'm of the attitude that the car *was* correct before, hence it would be easy to find what went wrong and correct.

On 911's- I'm very serious about setting the camshaft timing up if it has not been done.

Turbodiesel is correct on that. Both engatwork and myself made a goof with the timing chain and drove around one tooth off for some time before deciding something was wrong with all that racket up there. Point is, it will run reasonably well, even 14 deg out of time on the cam.
