Idle. How to set?

How do I set the idle on a 240d is there's no tach? I have tried a search but found threads on this procedure.

It varies with engine temp. That's why you have the adjustment knob on the dash. I keep mine as low as possible without shaking the car apart.

Yep, its the little screw stop pin at end of wire among the linkage pulled by the exclusive 240D idle adjust knob that you wanna fiddle with.

If it was me, I'd grab the wire end with vise grips while the engine's idling at lowest rumbling level.... then loosen the screw stop and slide it on the wire to take up slack without increasing the idle speed and with the dash knob turned all the way down - thats all.

it wasn't as cold tonight as it was last night so i decided to fiddle with the little knob. i used a little wd40 and gently eased out of the 'frozen' state.

now it works. it is amazing and fun to watch that little cable move around as i turn the knob.

i amaze myself sometimes. thanks to all of your help. at this rate, i'll have every problem fixed in about a week.

If you are talking about knowing the correct speed without tach, use a strobe light, make the fan totally stop, read the frequency and calculate.

Good luck,

What kind of strobe light are you talking about? I doubt you mean a timing light since you need a high energy impulse for one of them to work.

There are strobe lights available with built in signal generators that cause the light to pulse at a known and variable frequency. These are very common around plants that have a lot of machinery.

You know, you might be able to use a piezo electric sensor, clamp it to a fuel line and measure the frequency with a DMM that has a Hz scale.

Good luck,

Unfortunately Larry, I don't have those items in my roll-away. I guess the easiest thing to do in my case is to put the fuse back in for the tach and use it then. I have to pull it out to drive the car otherwise the tranny won't shift. I have a CA car that has a bug in the tach circuit that I haven't been able to figure out.

make sure you use some other lube besides wd40. it goes away fast. i like the teflon sprays, but a spray white lithium grease would work well too.
