Monark Glowplugs?? (Pic)

Pulled the plugs from the '84 300D in prep for timing chain replacement. The PO had replaced them about 6mos before. The only plugs I've seen are the loop types and the pencil type with the narrow tip (narrows about halfway down the tip).

These are the same width all the way down and have a "crown" on them that looks for the world like the Monark logo, but are probably Beru. No other identifying marks except #'s (907 11.5v 031)

Anyone have opinions on them? If they're OK, I'll just re-install, if Bosch would be better, I'll wait till I can afford those.

Go to autozone... $10.99 for BOSCH!!! I had 3 "Champion" and 2 "Crown" in my car. The 2 "Crown" were DEAD, and I don't see Champion as being something I want.

Get the Bosch.

IMHO

Champion, as least the ones I had, burned out pretty quick, but I also had shorted glowplug relay (on the Volvo) so they stayed on all the time. Drained the battery with the headlights on, and I'm sure this didn't help them any.

Just replaced a set of Bosch GP on it, only one had the correct resistance. One other one was open, the rest shorted (0 ohm resistance instead of the 0.7 the new ones had).

Goes to show that a continuity check won't alway suffice.

Went by Autozone and they have Bosch 80006 GP's for $7.99. Problem is, they look just like the ones I have (straight all the way out), except they say Bosch.

May just stick with these till I have problems ('course, they COULD be problems now considering the hard-starting of this engine!)

Bosch 80006 Glowplugs at AutoZone

I just replaced the glowplugs on my '83 240D, and I bought Bosch from AutoZone. Two of them had the reduced end on them, and the other two had a uniform tip diameter. It did not seem to make a difference on installation. They were marked the same and in the same kind of box. I am assuming there was a change in specification recently in this part.

My personal opinion....

Throw those Monark plugs as far away as you can

I replaced some reasonably good Bosch plugs in my '86 300SDL with a set of "Monark Diesel" plugs.

Over the next year, I had a hell of a time starting the car. It would start and stumble for 15 seconds before the idle became somewhat stable. Once I put a new set of Bosch plugs in, the car was better than ever!

It took a while to even figure out that it was the plugs.. I did some other work the same day I replaced the plugs so had to troubleshoot the other stuff first. Had no idea a set of glow plugs could make such a HUGE mess!

If you can get Bosch for $7.99 I'd by enough for the next THREE sets.

But that's just me.

Speaking of Monark, they also make diesel injectors for 617 engine. The price for "new" Monark injector is slightly more than Bosch rebuild. Anyone has experience with it? Good, bad or don't bother?

I think it's pretty funny that I didn't know diddly about these plugs until I changed them, and my first impression of the "crown" (monark?) turned out to be correct!

Just a thought!

Went back to AZ and sure enough, we went through them and found the new style narrow tipped ones. Would buy a couple sets if I had the $'s, but with finances in shambles and Xmas, I could only afford one, even at $7.99/ea. (hope they still have the new ones next time I go back).
