hood vent removal

I am trying to remove the hood vents that the windshield wipers come out of. I see these square attachments and can't figure out how to remove them. I did a search and came up with nothing. Any ideas?

using a dull nail or small screwdriver, depress the middle of the square until it pops out into the vent. once the middle is out the square thing comes off.

don't worry about losing the middle thing, it just drops below and you get it out when the whole vent comes off.

what a clever little device. thanks jen, you helped me complete my crow cowl air vent modification. i replaced my black vents with chrome ones, only for cosmetic reasons. check it out.

Pretty sweet. I've got chrome vents on my 240D, and thought they all came that way. Only recently have I been seeing the flat black plastic vents on a lot of cars.
