Smokin' update -Mechanical Malpractice?
Hi all:
Still sluggin' it out to save my 300D (82' 156K). To refresh: White smoke - LOTS - on leaving a light, stop sign, etc. Also, almost any "punch" of the accelerator. I've now had 2 Turbos put in (when I took it back after the first, the guy STILL thought it was a problem with the turbo and put in another). As you might guess he was dead wrong. Car still has the same smoking symptom. NO better, no worse than it was when I took it to him in the first place! He now says come in for a compression test. I told him that was upsetting since I asked him about doing one 2 weeks (and 2 turbos) ago. He says that the engine runs so well, he really didn't think it needed a rebuild. Also says my first turbo was full of oil, but he'd be happy to put it back in, if I wish... The car does run quite well.. if I never looked in the rear-view and (ignored the people giving me dirty looks), I might not even be aware that something was wrong. What to do? I really need some advice. I cannot afford the engine rebuild.. & have already spent $733. on a turbo that doesn't change anything. Shall I get him to put the old one back in? take it to Kraft German Auto for a 3rd opinion? I'd be most appreciative of some real guidance. Thanks, Joe Augustine |

ALDA Maybe
Has the alda been messed with on the car? You can usually tell by looking to see if the little plastic cap is still on it.
Could be that someone has adjusted uit trying to correct a different problem and now that your turbo is working correctoly the car is getting too much fuel hence the smoke. Just an idea anyway.

I would go to another shop, not because I think the one you're using is trying to rip you off or anything, but because he may just not see the problem and sometimes someone with a different perspective can spot a problem like you have. I can't think that it is a major problem ($$$$) since the car runs well and I guess doesn't use much oil or drink coolant?

Check out the other recent thread about oil loss and smoking. Is there any similarity in the cases? Are you using as much oil?
Try disconnecting the crankcase ventilation hose that goes from the valve cover to the air cleaner and see if that makes any difference. In that other thread, the problem seemed related to that hose.

White smoke as in steam or unburned diesel? If it's actually unburned diesel there has to be a serious problem with the injection pump or injectors, just generic overfueling will give black smoke 9 times out of 10.
SURE it's not steam? Cooland and oil level steady? Bluish white is oil and hard to tell the difference sometimes from the driver seat...
