The other choice was the turbo 300D which had good horsepower but it suffers from much lower fuel economy, it commonly needs major engine work at a much lower mileage, it has oil leak problems
The turbo 3L commonly needs major engine work? Where's that from?

For anyone interested, I just looked at a fairly clean '85 300D in Oklahoma City. The odometer quit at 290K and the entire cluster was replaced (the owner has the original cluster). The head was worked on last year and the front end supension was completely replaced; he has receipts for all of this. The tires are only a few months old (Continentals) and the A/C was rebuilt and recharged two years ago.

The body is straight and the car hasn't been wrecked, however, there is a small amount of bubbling on the driver's side rear wheel well. The original owner had the car repainted soon after she bought it (the seller is the second owner); the original color was beige and it was repainted teal. Paint was done professionally and all underhood decals, stickers, etc., were re-applied (the orignal owner purchased the car as a replacement to a totaled 300CD which was teal).

Everything works on the car, all of the glass is in good shape and uncracked, unblemished, etc. The vacuum door locks were replaced last year (again, the seller has receipts for this). The interior shows some wear, but nothing unreasonable and nothing that can't be repaired or replaced without too much effort (the seller told me it was leather, but it's actually M-B tex).

Engine has a small oil leak, but nothing major, or at least not too out of the ordinary for an M-B.

I went and looked at the car on Sunday and took it for a spin for about half an hour by myself. The engine and transmission were very smooth and the car had no problem reaching 75 MPH on the turnpike and the cruise control was able to maintain it easily.

I was thinking very seriously of buying it, but I just can't justify another vehicle while living in town. I have no connection to the seller whatsoever, I saw his ad in the local newspaper and called. The condition seems good for the vehicle's age and the price seems reasonable. At any rate, if anyone else would like to check it out, the seller can be reached at 405-692-1551.

If it is a 300D with a manual it is a Euro car that has been grey marketed into the US> I have seen and driven one myself and heard of several others in the US.

Have a great day,

Umm...I'll admit that he's been chasing fuel leaks, so I don't think he has an accurate fuel mileage record yet, but a friend of mine has an '84 euro 300D 4 speed, and I'm beating him in mileage numbers (he's getting 24 to 25, and I'm getting 27 to 30).

OTOH, his car's a lot more fun to drive I think his mileage numbers would go far up if he switched rear ends...
