transmission going into "park" while in "drive"

Hello, I'm driving the car. It's an automatic 83 MB 300D. All of a sudden I get to a red light, I stop the car. Then when I let go of the break to start going again, the car does not move front. All of a sudden it feels like if it is in parking even though it's on Drive. I have to accelerate it a bit and I can feel it going back into 1st gear. The problem is also intermitent. Could this be the shifter bushings or what else could it be?

Thanks,
Adiel

ps: At the point where the car is stopped and before I accelerate it to put it back into first, I cannot switch the shift lever past "N". It will not go into "R" or "P".

Are you saying that you put your can into Neutral when you stop at a light... then have trouble getting it back into gear ?

Sounds to me like major slippage. I seriously doubt it is actually going into park. It is more likely just NOT engageing the torgue converter because of low fluid, as dieselbeagle mentioned, or your tranny could be on it's way out.

Also , the linkage of the shift lever to the trans could be out of adjustment....

Might want to check the transmission and motor mounts, when a car won't allow you to shift from one to the next, the linkage can be binding up somewhere.

I think its somewhere in the direction of the linkage of the shift lever to the trans adjustment. Is there some type of "faq" to adjust/check this?

Thanks Again,
Adiel

Have you tried the search feature on this site ? Have you read the 'sticky' at the top of the page about searching ? Good reading...

Do you have any literature about your car ? Like the Haynes manual ? The CD available with the MB Factory shop manual on it ?

Some of these things are too complicated to post safely ... MB is way over engineered... and most items have two or three parts changing over the years... one warning not posted on here and you have a much bigger repair bill than you would have initially...
