W140
I need your opinion(s)
I'm thinking of switching my 2001 VW Jetta (110K Km) for a 1993 300 SD (195k Km asking price 15.7k$ canadian i think the jetta wil be worth something around 14k) I love the W140 ice cold look very impresive and classy I read about the W140 and they seem not to be as trouble free as I tought Something about benting rods (fixed in 1995 model??) Will the maintenance be a killer in a W140 ? Is it reliable ? On my jetta i was able to change the timing belt, nozzles etc etc by myself ...will i be able to do the same on the W140 ? (my first guess is no) thanks for the input |

I see you new to the board Welcome. Try using the "search" feature and I'm sure you'll find plenty of info on that type of car also you may want to search 350's which are the same. I'd keep the VW

i was thinking in the same , i did a search on benzworld and it's gonna cost me more $$$ then the Jetta, and they are not so problem free as i tough
![]() Too bad i love the shape and the allure of that car I have a W126 (my gf and my second car) but a black W126 and a black W140 would look darn GOOD in the driveway Gangster paradise... |

Don't give up on the W140 if you really want one. I already have 3 cars and right now no such money to spend because of our new house, but if I was in the market for a W140 I'd most likely get the S320. It doesn't have the rod-bending problem of the diesel and it's reasonably economical. I agree with you that they are very impressive looking cars.

I just bought a '94 S320 for my wife, what a rock on the road. It's a very comfortable and solid car. Plenty of pickup for a car that size. It also has good road feel. It's a bit bigger and heavier that my 300D, but on a long trip it sure is nice.

Great car
I'd recommend, but search the board before proceeding. Make sure the diesel has had the factory fix for the 'rod bending' problem before proceeding with a S350(300SD). A lot of members feel that these W140 cars are too troublesome, but I have owned my 93 300SE(S320) since June 2002 and have only had to replace my air mass meter($US300) and completed the 60K service($US500) as well as oil services. This is a great car for road trips attaining around 25MPG in extreme comfort and unparalleled safety. Feels like driving a brick! The big minuses you will read about are leaky evaporators, head gaskets, bad vacuum pumps and faulty engine wiring harnesses. If you find the right car you very well could buy what was an $US80K new car for the price of a new Hyundai or Kia.
