Delvac 1 for a '96 C220
I recently picked up an '96 C220 in great condition. The maintainence on the car has been pretty strict. We already buy D1 for our two diesels, and since D1 is rated for gasoline engines as well, why not run it in the C220 all year?
Not to start an oil war and that dino is just as good under regular circumstances. Just curious to other diesel guys out there that love their gasoline counterparts ![]()

As long as the C220's owners manual calls for a 5w-40 oil D1 is fine.

I'm gettin' excited! I have the Alldata information and for all the mercedes models I have looked up they all recommend 5w-40 I believe or 5w-30. I've looked up '97 E300 '97 E430 '96 C220, etc...

NO Mercedes takes 5W-30. From what I have seen every European car takes at least xxW-40. We used to have a '99 VW Passat 1.8 Turbo, and the owner's manual said only to use 5W-30 for minor topping off, not for full oil changes. I also knew someone who had the V-6 Passat and his manual said the same thing.

Here is a quote from the Mobil website: - This is the same as Delvac 1 Mobil 1 Truck & SUV is a 5W-40 viscosity grade product and is recommended by ExxonMobil where 5W-30, 10W-30 and 15W-40 lubricants are specified. Consult your owner's manual for specific manufacturer recommendations which may be required for warranty protection. Mobil 1 Truck and SUV is recommended for use in gasoline and diesel powered trucks and SUVs built by Ford, GM, and DaimlerChrysler. Mobil 1 Truck and SUV further meets the diesel engine requirements of Cummins, Powerstoke, Duramax and Navistar – for bigger, heavier duty truck applications, such as delivery vans and utility fleets. Mobil 1 Truck and SUV is fully compatible with conventional engine oils.

The reason Mobil 1 says that about their 5W-30 is because they don't sell the ideal oil which is 5W-40, in the U.S. market. What I would like to know is why the same engine that is put in a car and a truck, suddenly needs a "special truck/SUV" oil. We used to have a '93 Ford Taurus with a 3.8 V-6. This is the same V-6 they started putting in the Explorers. Why does it suddenly need a special oil? This is not to start an oil debate, more like challenging their marketing (scam).

You do have a point; there's no reason why Ford's 4.6L V8 would require a different oil depending on whether it was installed in a Mustang, Crown Vic, F-150, etc. |

The one I get the biggest kick out of is Quakerstate's "special" oil for 4 X 4's. Now, I could see maybe a special transfer case oil, maybe, but motor oil.......uhhhh NO! Another one I love is this sudden declaration that 75,000 miles is "HIGH MILEAGE", so now you need a special oil for that. The next thing you know there will be special oil based on the color of your car.

michakaveli,
I use Mobil Delvac-1 in all my cars now. I find it is a superior oil for ensuring dirt and combustion products from blow-by are removed when the oil is changed. All my cars, except the 1982 240D which has a serious rear crankshaft seal leak that predates the switch to Delvac-1, use less oil between changes (my E300 TurboDiesel uses no oil between changes of 8,000 miles now (85,000 miles), while, when I first bought it with under 45,000 miles it ate a quart every 2500 miles). The 240D starts in near 0*F weather, which even using Castrol Syntech 5W-50, Mobil 1 15W-50 and Mobil 1 0W-40 it never did. Its rear seal leakage problem is not something the oil type is going to fix or make worse. The engine needs to be removed to fix it right and that is not happening. One of the things I have noticed on the gas cars is the oil gets dirty looking, where the other Mobil 1 products tended to stay clean or clear looking longer. Hope this helps, Jim
