Aldedmon,

Believe it or not I bought a bottle of the Redline Water Wetter from the local Pep Boys for $6.95! I was there buying some cleaners and some Techron Cleaner and figured I would check for that too. The stuff works great, I have had it in my car for a couple of weeks now and the temp never goes about 95C.

You can also order the K&N's through them as well, I've seen them for about $110.00 for a set of two on a 500E on various web sites so I would guess it should cost about the same at Pep Boys.

If you don't have a Pep Boys check your local Auto Store, you might be surprised.

Manny,

I didn't know they had the K&N's. I never saw them on the parts list.

Now that I know this I'll order mine through them in a couple of weeks. Want to support these guys as much as possible, disregard my previous suggestion!

Thanks for passing that along.

Whats water wetter? I have a 190 16v that tends to run on the hot side. Will this help?

Thanks

David,

I would certainly suggest trying it. I've driven my car in stop and go traffic 87F and the temp never exceeded 95C. I of course combined the Watter Wetter with 35% 100K Coolant and remainder water.

If anything at least it will help maintain your cooling system. Can't go wrong for $7.00.

Where do I get it?

Is watter wetter a generic name like a cotton swab or a product like q-tip? And where do I get this stuff?

Thanks again.

David

Water-Wetter is a product by RedLine Racing that reduces your coolant temperature by making your coolant less prone to cavitation.

Remember the water does the work of transferring heat. Anti-freeze merely lowers the freezing-point (generally not needed) at the expense of decreasing your boil-over. MB Anti-Freeze also contains anti-corrosive and lubricating compounds as well bufferring the water to a PH of approx. 8.

If you really don't need freeze protection, I have the best luck with 40% anti-freeze, 60% distilled water, and 1-bottle of Water-Wetter. Yes, as long as your mixing anti-freeze or a heat-transfer enhancer with the distilled water, you're not going to get a corrosive reaction from the distilled water. Check out this post (scroll down for the MB Tech Bulletin):

Royal Purple also makes an anti-cavitation heat-transfer enhancing product called "Purple Ice": http://www.synerlec.com/specf_itm00007.htm

What is normal and what is high temp on a 240D (115/123)?

Mine run about 185-195 degrees. In winter hard to see 175.
Both cars have a 185 thermostat.

New to Mercedes this year. Had nothing but Ford and some older GM cars. All my vehicles are rear wheel drive. Will Not own a front wheel drive!

What mix do I use?

I just had my water pump replaced and they put what ever mixture they put in. It looks like MB coolant (it's clear with a yellow tint) in there. Should I drain it and put a water / water wetter combo in there or can I still get max cooling by just adding in some water wetter? At cruise, it stays at around 90-95 C. At a long light it will climb to a max of 110 and I do not feel comfortable with that. It does not seem to get hotter than 110.

Again, thanks for your advice.

David- you may wish to try Jimf's cooling piggy tail mod to the ct sensor

there's lots of good feedback on it and there's quite a few folks running them...haven't heard any down side, except for probabilty of elec fans wearing out sooner
