I keep finding water under the carpet behind the drivers seat in my 1988 560 sl. The front mats are damp...but not soaked like the rear mats. Both sides get wet but there is much more water behind the drivers seat. I read about clogged drains by the hood springs...but everything looks ok to me. I have seen that other MB models have had similar problems but I have not seen any other 107's with this problem. Can anyone offer any possible solutions? Thanks for your help and Merry Christmas.

My rear floor pans are rustbuckets! Many years of water working its way in there. I think it has to do with the fact they're the lowest point in the floorboards. The previous owner wasn't exactly the most detail-oriented guy. Among other things (like condoms in the glove box) I found an unfinished pint of vodka under the driver's seat!!!
My only solution is to keep the car dry, treat the floorboards with some Rust Bullet, and clean out the AC drains.

Check the hatch seal. On my SL, the area under the "hat check" wooden panel (and accompanying felt pad) was completly rusted out due to water seepage. Had to have section cut out and replaced ($$!).
Good luck. |

On the condoms: I can only hope that, paraphrasing Frank Oz in the Blues Brothers, that they were not "soiled"...eewwwww....
Anyway, I'd definitely look very strongly at that seal under the boot lid. The lip of this lid was the ONLY place on my car that had any rust (now eradicated). This gasket is expensive (around $70-90?) but IF YOU BUY THE OEM PART, it's very easy to install (assuming that you have a channel left to install it into). I bought an aftermarket replacement, it fit like crap, and after struggling with it and a good part of a tube of Wurth weatherstripping cement, I tossed it and $50 into the garbage before buying the original MB part. Most of my other aftermarket seals fit fine, though. I've seen a 560sl at a dealership with this seal bad, where the convertible top dry-rotted and disintegrated as it was unfolded! You should address this problem ASAP.

Agree with the hatch seal diagnosis, but offer the following:
If you have wet front mats as well, then you probably have clogged drains on the outside of the blower cavity, and/or rust-out inside the blower motor cavity. Rust occurs there because the plastic cover warps and allows water draining off the hood and windshield to get into the blower cavity, where there are NO drains. So it rusts and then there is nothing to stop the water. From there, it's all downhill to the rear footwell. Suggest cleaning out the drains and replacing the blower cover and gasket. You may also get to spend some quality time fiberglassing the rust holes in the cowl area as well.

Seals, absolutely. If you haven't been in there previously, now's the time to grit your teeth and pull up both the carpet and the black sound insulation to take a serious look at what you've got. My SL's floor was almost rusted through, and it had been completely undiagnosed because the undercoating hid it from beneath.
