steering box end play

I had it
i started reading all the old posts on end play in the steering box
I cheched out coupling tie rod ends etc
Nothing but the box had end play in it
So I modified a wrench to fit down through the m front of the exhaust manifold and loosened the nut , moved the set screw out a 1/2 turn
What a difference
The car feels great
I hated the way it felt before 2" of end play in the wheel
I believe the worm screw gets worn after years and puts play in the unit
Same thing happens in industry with that type of ball screw
I seen may with screw worn and slop in unit
I don't think it came from the factory that loose
People would have vomited after paying $65,000 for a car
Looking at the ball srew set up the screw must be somewhat worn
This gave it new live to an old unit
made the move to adjust and glad I did

i have found that cars with 300k on them will still react favorably to an adjustment.

I agree they get loose and you can't enjoy driving a car will all thet play in the wheel
I put it off for a year or so but it really was bothering me thinking I would ruin the steering box
It was probably one of the easiest jobs to correct for the most improvement
Those ball srews must really take a beating over the years
The monovalve was the easiest for a big improvement in air temp

Check the coupling that connects the steering column to the steering box. Raise the hood, locate the steering column end, rock the steering wheel and see if you can see any play. I had to replace mine after about 100k.
