Storing the Hard Top without a stand
Now that the weather is warming up here in GA I would like to take the hard top off of my '83 380SL but I do not have a hoist or a stand. What is the proper way to store the hard top without either of these devices?

Never thought about that since I have a stand, but I do know that mine will lay flat on the floor, like it sits on the car, with no ill effects. The four centering pins support it. This is a 129 though.

Hard top storage
I had my hard top propped up on the back side of the top, leaning against the wall. I used some seat cushions underneath to dispearse the weight some. I saw how the top sat in a storage rack, and it seemed to rest on the bars similar to the way that it did on the cushions. I had it sitting there for a couple of months until I could make a hoist and storage device. Now it is hanging from my garage ceiling.

Can these tops become deformed from being stored improperly? That thought never occurred to me until I read this thread.

Hardtop
I have read posts in the past that made statements as to how durable and solid these hardtops are. Once I got mine off of the car with a friend helping, I moved it around in my garage by grabbing the handles on the inside headliner area and lifting it up. I never saw much in the way of movement or flexing of the top at any time. And considering the weight (130 lbs) in comparison to the size, I would say that they are solidly built.

Just watch the paint. If it were me, I would put cardboard, or foam, on any edges, or any parts of it which will come in contact with either the floor, or wall. I would definately not take, too many chances with it though..
This was suggested, by CarmaSutra, and relayed to you by Truckinik, because CarmaSutra was banned today... Last edited by truckinik; 04-19-2007 at 05:40 PM. |

I made a couple of wooden forms (L shaped) such that I can stand the hardtop on them and against the wall, then covered it with old blankets. I put thick foam against the wood so that it does not scratch the paint. Saves a bit of space and it can be put in a corner of the garage, out of the way.

Someone up here showed pixs of their garage with mounts on the wall.
They were very interesting, looked like they stored them well AND out of the way. Anyone find the link ??

Hey guys, this is my simple solution for the past 2 summers - it's just 2 wooden (2"x2") frames screwed to the joists, and distanced apart so that the hard-top pegs hang over the outside edges of the frame. And the bed cover keeps the dust off
![]() To protect my head I pushed foam pipe lagging onto the edges of the hardtop.

If stored upright
The only problem I have read on the forums was that if it is stored upright the back glass needs to be supported if it is in a place that will get hot.
