95 sl 600 -asr
I have a 95 SL600 with 124K on it. Last year I had the ASR unit on the drivers side go out. The local Benz dealer wanted $4,600 to replace it. I pulled it off and opened it up. The wire shielding fell out in pieces. I seperated each wire and coated them with plastidip coating. Bingo, ran like a champ until last week. I've pulled it off and it didn't look like any of the wires were touching. I checked continuity and it appears several of the wires are connected via the circuit board some where. The wires are numbered and lettered on the circuit board and the plug in. Where can I find out what circuits are tied together? Is there a by pass fix I can do? The car runs, it just won't accellerate fast. It now surges when it wasn't doing this initially. Where can I get a used ASR box without paying $3,600 as some places want. Thanks, Brad

Are you sure you mean ASR unit? There is only one ASR control unit - not one for each side.

Sl600 asr
The unit I'm talking about is on the drivers side, it has the throttle cable and linkage connected to it. There is the throttle body butterfly valve on the inside. When you take the aluminium cover off there is a set of plastic gears and a circuit board inside. There must be a solenoid in there too as the gears do not engage when the linkage is actived. There is a matching box on the opposite side of the engine that is the throttle body/butterfly valve. I know these control air intake into the pleneum. It should be the same as a 500 or 300 unit. The ASR light is on and will not turn off at the switch on the dash. Any ideas. Thanks, Brad

Sounds like the throttle actuator, aka ETA, of which there are two, and which can trigger the ASR light. I'd be a bit skeptical of a used one but they can be rebuilt.

That sounds like it. The circuit board has a cable connecting both sides of the main (ldrivers side) box to the computer. I think it's telling the computer it's slipping and won't allow hard accelleration. Can this be over ridden? The flashing light in the instr. cluster does flash as it does when the car does slip. Just the ASR light is on. Ideas. Thanks, Brad

Hard to say for sure if you're in the limp home mode based on that description. No, not really anyway to override it - just have to diagnose the problem, which may not be the throttle actuators. There is so much information on this problem in the archives - that's where you should start, plus reading the fault codes, also in the archives.

Thanks, it's a good start. I am in the limp home mode.

Has the wirng harness been changed??? It suffers from the same problem as the ETA wiring.
As deanyel said, the ETA can be rebuilt from the sources contained in MENU#24. Prices are reasonable. But don't forget the wirning harness . . . it's a 'must' replace. |
