I would like to know if anyone has replaced the coil on a 560SL with an MSD box. And, if they were pleased with the results.

Not that I'm aware of, but if you want a little extra punch, remove the resistor that retards the timing by 6 degrees. You'll be amazed at what that can do to the car. Just make sure you run only high octane fuel afterwards...

Juice up ignition
Hello all, I,m new to your forum. I was reading the article where someone suggested removing the resistor which retards the ignition 6 degrees. Interesting! Any one have any info on this? Where is this resistor located? Any conplications? Also interested hearing from someone that has installed first gear start! thanks. Philip 87 560 sl 45k

Driver's side fender, under the hood, there is a bundle of wires that is zip tied to the fender. It will be wrapped with black electrical tape. If you do this mod, be sure to only use high octane fuel...damage to the valves will occur if you neglect to do this.

Better Performance without Ignition Resistor?
This is the first time I heard about running the 560SL without the ignition retard resistor. I understand why high octane would be mandatory due to the potential for spark knock due to timing advance.
Is this a mod that others have done with good, long term results? Any issue with the catalytic converter or the automatic timing sytem? Why was it not set up this way from factory? Disadvantages? Thanks |

I think i'll put it back, and save a few bucks by running mid-grade or regular fuel. |

HI Guys, OK I have a '86 560, Is this procedure for this year too? I thought that the timing was set at 14 degrees BTC? Does removing the resister brings it to 8 Degrees BTC. As far as fuel goes there must be 3 stickers or plates on my car that says to only use premium. 91 octane. Does this mean that I could use Mid grade 89 octane now and the car would be and run ok?

Yes, my 86 does.

That's why the resistor was put in. MB added it to counter all the times that owners would run lower octane and take it to the dealer to complain of pinging.
