Solid subframe mounts
Like so many, my front subframe mounts in an '83 380SL are completely shot. I have the engine and subframe out of the car and have been thinking of possibly machining some solid mounts. I've searched about everything, and there is very little on the subject relating to Mercedes.
In a traditional car with a frame, the suspension is essentially solid, and it would seem that mounting a subframe directly to the chassis would have the same effect. My search brought me to this video which would seem to validate the idea - Camaro Solid Subframe Mount Video - YouTube Part of the reason for considering this route is to not have to change mounts again and change the spacing between the chassis and the subframe. What am I missing? |

The Excellent ride characteristics
Of your chassis are provided by the Rubber Suspension Buffers.
Solid (Or HARDER Plastic) buffers will cost you in ride quality. [Think Cadillac VS Abrhams Main Battle tank]

Why not use the OEM parts as they aren't too expensive?
I think the front subframe mounts for the 107 chassis are the same as used on the W114/115 cars and that subframe mount kit can be had for just a little over $100 and are pretty easy to change even with the engine in the car. I bought a Febi kit in the past year for a W115 for about that cost (same P/N as yours; 115 330 1875). Note that Febi may not be an OEM part, but was a reasonable replacement and I've been happy with them.
It wouldn't seem to make sense not to use those parts. The longevity of these mounts is also quite good. |

![]() Since my choice is likely subframe spacers or solid bushings, I may just give it a try and report back. (I'm planning on doing an engine swap and will very likely need some additional engine-hood clearance. May be able to notch the subframe and keep the stock bushings... but won't know until I do a trial fit.) |
