My 83 is tuned up and passed inspection, but has a lot of unburnt gas exhaust smell? Is that just mine, or is it the gray market emissions control? Or do the 380s do it too?

Question Unburnt Gas

Mine also seems to burn a little rich(unburnt Gas). I'm thinking of ordering the Direct Hits ignition system(I think someone else in this thread mentioned it. I'm hoping it will help. The Vehicle runs really well otherwise.

Let us know how that goes. I've thought about it too, but I've read about problems some have had on this website. My tech advised against them too.

Different subject--I just now posted a question about car insurance. Any special considerations you know about for gray market cars? I know I confused a lot of insurance agents when I read them my VIN.

Cool Insurance

I had no problems with my insurance company here in Canada(I'm using ING) in fact my insurance on the 500SL is cheaper than a 85 Nissan 300ZX we have. In fact the 500SL and my 89 Jeep Cherokee(Winter Car) are exactly the same($733 cnd per Year)Including driving to and from work.

Oh *speechless...*... beautiful cars!

I am sort of SL-Shopping right now.. I'm not sure if I want a late 560SL or an early R129 300SL/500SL.

I like those R129 wheels on the R107! How did you fit them?

timing chain

Someone just told me the early '80s 500SL Euros already had dual timing chains. Is that true?

Repair manual

Eric, have you (or anyone else with a 500SL gray market) found a good shop manual specifically for these cars?

Unhappy

Alan,

The only thing that I've been able to find for the euro has been the micro-film manual, wasn't worth it, a real pain to use.
