SL 600 New Toy - What should I look for

Hi there guys and gals,

I have just put down a deposit on a 1994 SL600. It is having a wiring loom replaced under the bonnet and other minor work before I take delivery. Attached is a picture.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me what I should look for in the car to ensure it is running true and any obvious problems I should investigate during my 3 month 'warranty' period. Not that I think I shall get much in the way of warranty.

Cheers and thanks in advance

Vince

Congrat to your new toy!! The SL600 is a sweet car. How many miles does it has on the clock? I heard most cars in Hong Kong do not rake up too many miles, is that true?

The only real kicker will be the hydraulics for the soft top. I will make sure it operates accordingly. Since you mentioned the new wiring harness is being done, that should pretty much it. Do a search here in the forum. There are plenty of topics on what to look out for in the R129. Have fun!!

Hi Elau

Thanks for the reply.

Most cars in HK dont do that many miles, but they do suffer from start/stop type driving. In line with this, brakes/rotors, suspension and transmission are common problems. The paint also suffers due to the pollution here, so many have re-sprays or touch ups.

We also suffer here because almost no-one beleives in keeping books up to date. The reason for this is that being a duty free port, there are several 'grey' importers selling new cars, but without full factory back up. Hence you never know what has been done to the car and by whom.

Good point re the convertible hydraulics. I did have a look at teh actuators and could not see any leaks. In fact the soft top was in as new condition, so I assume it was rarely used.

Vince, congratulations on your purchase! Nice looking car, especially those 18" AMG wheels.

Hope you have many happy miles of travel in it.
