240D Engine 87,697 miles.
Just bought a 1979 123 with a 4 speed from a car dealers lot. .It has a dead starter but we bumped it off okay.
The beast runs good but the body and running gear totally shot away. I now find the engine was a Mercedes Exchange Programme engine. It was installed in Norman Oklahoma by Unique Motors in 9/98 at 245,188 miles. It has 87,697 miles on it. Open to offers....around $700.00 ,,,but do you think I should keep it being as it in OE and low miles? ..or should I stick it on eBay ? If there is someone close who needs a 240engine I'll leave it in the car so it can be run up...so I'll fit a starter to it.. My Zip 73080.

Not to be mean here, but I gotta ask what kind of dealer would be selling such a thing, and hopefully you didn't give them more than a few hundred for it.
For a W123, in basically a parts car condition only good for a motor and trans as you have described it, thats about all it's worth. I got my 80 for free, even came with another engine (rusty body, had blown engine), I paid $100 for my 82, which had an excellent body needing only paint due to checking, running engine, new battery, new tires, rare Sienna interior, and bad trans. If you were to remove certain parts, such as the 4spd stuff or running engine, they could be sold for more and worth more, but as we all know, as a whole parts car they don't have the value. That's just the nature of the beast, ask most of the folks that deal with the stuff, they'll agree, that's a tall price for a beat up worn out parts car.

There always seems to be two different standards for prices between "parts" and "parts car" markets.

In my mind a parts car with a low mileage factory rebuild is a whole different matter than a used engine in running condition.
His car has a working stick tranny too. Tom W
