One More time- Trailer lights for ML320

I'm having comprehension problems.
Ive printed out the instructions on wiring a trailer for a ML320. It starts out with a fixed plug in bumper area -running wires up to the trunk compartment. I think in my case , they dont apply.
My questions are...
Since I haul a light weight trailer/no brakes 3 times a year..May I just plug my lights into the connection that is in the compartment behind the First Aid Compartment? Its a little 3 wire plus ground plug. The most common plug used.. as far as i know.
And do I need the exclusive Mercedes connector ? Seems with a Mercedes SUV with the wires brought up to that spot it should be a breeze.
Another site says U-Haul has a $15 connector and the guy just keeps it in the First aid compartment. I stopped at U Haul this morning but it was a 30 minute line up. I need no perminant plug down by the hitch.
Just want a simple cheap solution.

If you have a wiring diagram, you should be able to just scotch-lok into the wires you need in behind the firstaid kit. I don't see exactly what your question/problem is. It's not really what I personally would do, but if that's what you want to do, what's stopping you? Do you need advice on running the wires or what? There is a small converter box that gets installed, this may be to convert the stop signal, like what's used on other trailer light setups, I can't see where this would create a big problem, just get a generic one.

Thanks For the reply Gilly.

I just wonder why SUV's in particular arent just ready to plug and go (regarding trailer lights).

My GM Van has a optional trailer package, but think I could plug and go? No needed a dealer electric wiring conversion package.

I made it to U haul this afternoon and saw a wall full of connectors, but none say Mercedes and they dont have them organized in a computer. The Salewoman just said "pick out one you think will work". My eyes glazed over.

In addition, in the box we are to plug into, there are 3 female connections taped together. Which to use ? one has 3 wires, could it be that easy..?

Yes it should be simple. Most likely this week I will go to the Mercedes dealer and buy the big wire harness connector. (I assume my little trailer plug will plug into that).

Finding the generic isnt working. And if you cant find the answer on this Forum, then chances are slim of finding one.

Thanks again Gilly.

UPDATE 8/31/2003: After this post a reader contacted and sold me his used harness for $75.
