98 ML rearview mirror issues

This is kinda weird. Yesturday I noticed something that looks like water inside the rearview mirror. The thing is there are no leaks in the roof. Upon closer inspection I noticed something ozzing out of the bottom of the mirror. Whatever it is, has the consistancy of thick black oil. What the hell? Any ideas?

Thanks

I assume you have the auto dimming rearview mirror. If so, that is the electro-chromatic fluid, the stuff that tints it darker when electric current is applied to it (when the photo-sensor detects headlights behind you). This is the first time I have ever heard of one just springing a leak, but I guess it is possible (or, did it get hit?)

Interesting. I noticed the EXACT same thing with mine about a month ago.

I cannot detect any leakage as far as I can tell, but there definitely is a loss of some fluid as about 3-4mm near the top appears to be absent of this mystery fluid.

I'm not pleased with the issue, but I'm living with it. Perhaps I'll make a stop at the local dealership and see if any other MLs came in with the same issues?

I had the same problem on mine about one year or so ago. Ultimately, after writing to mbusa, the dealer replaced it on a goodwill/loyalty basis.

Probably the electrochromatic fluid for autodimming feature.
AFAIK, it is best to have it looked at/replaced, since that stuff is corrosive!

cheers,
Bram
