seeking advice on G purchase

Hi all, this is my first post.

I starting my research into purchasing an early model G (79-93). To date, I am leaning towards a gd300 and I am open to either of the swb or lwb. I am not into the posh interiors or the other luxurys like power windows and stuff the current nas spec models have but I rather have a truck that resembles a CDN military spec vehicle perhaps minus the green paint!

Anyways I am looking for pointers into what particular items I should be most cautious about when it comes to these vehicles so please feel free to chim in.

One item that I noticed on a few vehicles in th epast few months is that the speedo needs replacing so is this a common problem? Is is expensive and how readily available are spaces for this and I guess for most other components. Is the MB dealer networks decent good guys to deal with.

I should also note that I am in Calgary, Alberta were we are able to import 15 y.o. vehicles and that is probably the route I will take so if any of you have advice on that process I would welcome it as well.

Cheers and thanks in advance

Chris

I don't know of much that you should look out for in the earlier models, since they lack a lot of the electrical systems that plague most of the newer Mercedes. But the only thing I have heard has to do with the front axles, but I'm not too sure thats the only thing I knowof that you might want to ask around about.

Chris, Let me warn you against Red Cougar Enterprises up in your neck of the woods. They've very badly screwed over a couple of my acquaintances who purchased from them.

Drop me an email, if you want a good source for more information. I have a PDF of a very helpful buying guide I can send.

My email addy is: gwagen at bellsouth dot net

Here's one in your back yard. I don't know anything about the seller, so do your "Due Diligence".

Thanks Dutch, I have seen this one on EBAY many times before. I am just not sure if this is the one for me. Has had a lot of work done to it but the thing I do not understand is the fact that the seller mentions that it has been lowered! I can't figure out why things like this can get pimped out but that is just my opinion. I have noticed the seller in the classifieds on clubgwagen.com so I am not sure if he has had any other dealing with the others here.

want a Gwagen?

Despite the distance, I strongly recommend you contact Sean Philyaw at Eurotruck in Georgia, US. He is knowledgeable, absolutely fair and honest, and will give you any help he can.

Do NOT buy any car that is not in your country with a legit title. I did this and lost a lot of money. Buy one that is already in USA or Canada, and has the paperwork to prove it. I lost at least twelve thousand dollars on mine. And do NOT do business with German Auto Tours in Maryland- not to be trusted in any circumstances.
