2008 ML320 CDI Braking
We have about 1,000 miles on our new 2008 ML320 CDI and have noticed that it uses downshifting to assist in braking. It is a neat feature, took a little to get used to and we like it. We have to be careful when we use our other vehicles to remember they don't?
Anyone else experience the braking? Jim W. |

As far as I know, there isn't any feature like that on your MB. It sounds like you're experiencing a harsh, or premature downshift. Most of the 722.9 transmission issues have been sorted out, but there's still a few here and there. You're dealer shouldn't be surprised when you ask them about it. They'll probably update the software in the transmission and/or engine control units. Last edited by ILUVMILS; 04-18-2008 at 10:10 PM. |

His recommendation was: If you are not experiencing problems with the 7G-Tronic, be happy; and do not let the dealer do any flash upgrades to it. They hope to have that final solution available by September.

The downshift isn't harsh, rather a pleasant feel as if the brakes were receiving a progressively larger boost. If it is not harmful I enjoy it.

My 2004 ML350 downshifts to hold my speed as I go downhill too. I was surprised the first time I expected to pick up speed as I coasted down a big hill and had the transmission downshift.
So far as I know all the transmissions on the gas ML's downshift automatically to maintain your speed as you go downhill. I don't know about the diesels but it probably is the same. I believe this feature is covered in the manual. I know I have the 722.6 transmission and you have the 722.9 but I believe the feature is on both. Joe

Where I really notice, and like, the downshifting is approaching a stop sign or light. It's a very nice feel. We have had two other ML's that did not do it, nor does our 1978 diesel.
Today is a scouting trip to see if the salt was washed off the roads so we can take the 300SD out for the season. Jim W. |
