AWD OR 4-Matic OR SAME - RCLASS
Hi Folks. I'm contemplating purchasing a pre-owned R-Class. I see many ads describe their vehicle as "all wheel drive" and yet the rear deck lacks the "4-Matic" badging. When I inquire, I often get a simple response such as: "Its all wheel drive" or "they are all all-wheel-drive". Is this true? If so what's the difference between "all-wheel-drive" and "4-Matic". Thanks to all who might shed some light on this. Any additional recommenadations and "look-out-fors" on the R-Class would be most appreciaited.

The 4-Matic is an all-wheel-drive system, also called full-time four-wheel drive. The distinction between these and part-time four-wheel drive is the existence of a center differential.
The M-B 4-Matic uses a differential that applies more torque to the rear wheels than to the front, under normal driving conditions. Well, at least in the E class, but I would be surprised if the R were different.

The 06 models did not come with the 4matic badge. It was added later after 2wd models started being offered, none of which I have ever seen.

I've seen 06 models with the badging. Am I correct to assume that all models in 06 had AWD/4-Matic regardless of badging? is there another way to ascertain this such as through the VIN? Thanks again.

Crouch under the front bumper and look if you see driveshafts between transmission and front wheels. It should have been obvious
