slowdriver, if your still under warranty I would try another dealer in your area if possible. They are not created equal. The two dealers in my area are like night and day as far as service is concerned. I agree with you on your Mercedes Experience............Unlike Any Other, what a joke.

Yeah, this is a rip-off to be sure, MB says in the TSB that the dealers were supposed to do it at the next visit and they then give warranty times for doing it. I'd tell the dealer what you said about how this sours you on another MB purchase, then i'd call Mercedes and tell them that too. Stress (or at least mention) that you're the original owner, in otherwords YES you can afford to buy a NEW MB if you so desire (or DON'T desire!).
I agree that calling another dealer can't hurt. Tell them you've read the TSB.

Well, I called MB Corp @ 800 367-6372 early last week and gave them the TSI # to review. A couple days later I made a status check call back to MB Corp and thay informed me they would cover it under warranty and would contact the dealer who would contact me to make an appointment. Guess what no call from the dealer -- so I called the dealer today. The service manager informed me the dealer has no direct responsibility to the MB Corp but only to the district manager further stating MB Corp performs more or less a customer service function (sure drag me the customer into the office politics of MB). After I had a serious discusion the service manager he agreed to arrange an appointment to do the work under warranty saying he didn't want me to feel Iwas being "bounced around" by the process.

What happened to "Slowdriver #1"? You get lost in the new server process or what? You're back to 1 post too!
It's good they're going to do it, it's a little cavalier to say that MB Corp (I assume you mean corporate offices) have no responsibility to the dealers or vice-versa. Sounds like someone there needs an atitude adjustment. It was also irresponsible of MB to not recontact you, what kind of customer relations is THAT? Especially a high-line car like MB. I would have called the same person back at MB. That's an important thing to note, get names and direct contact numbers at MB for stuff like this.

re: fuel filter

I have a 98 ML recently hit 60k miles so I called the dealer about this, guess what the SA claimed ignorant, yadi yadi yada, never heard of it that kind of ****. That was enough to set me off, so I wrote a nasty comment on MBUSA's website, including sticking this issue with my state attorney general, etc. within a week MBUSA called me back and told me they are not resposible for this fuel filter update since it is an improvement and my vehicle is out of warranty. These suckers issued the TSB in Oct 01 which was after my vehicle expired (I got a early production ML A008xxx, that was titled in Oct 97). All that rep offered was to refer this to the service manager of my local dealer (remember one of his man claimed ignorance about this issue). Thankfully, the same day, the manager called me back and offer to update the fuel filter housing and lines for free, but I still have to pay for the fuel filter and its installation. I know I can't get it all so I accepted the deal, at least I don't have to pay all the labor to get that update done. I guess not all MB stealers are created equal.

The only parts involved are the filter and lines, I don't know what the "housing" is or exactly what you are getting done free.......sounds like "nothing"

Oh, after rereading the post, if they are making you pay for the filter and the "normal" labor to replace just the filter the normal way, then I'd be satisfied I guess, in a situation like this.

Gilly,
What is the normal labor rate for sticking the fuel filter in?

Since my last post, my fuel pump did finally die! I was out of town and the dealer was going to do the upgrade while he was in there...alas, parts were backordered and I wanted to get back home, so I'm stuck with the old setup.

Anyway, I'm almost due for the 60K service, so I'll get it taken care of then.

You mean just to change out the filter itself (if it's already been upgraded) or to install the new long filter?

Gilly,
I still have the original old style filter. If the dealer were to install the upgraded fuel lines for free, my responsibility will be to pay for the normal (new style fuel filter) replacement and the labor cost. Just want to have some idea how much I should be expecting. I am assuming it will take 1 hour labor plus cost of the new fuel filter, i.e. roughly $200 bucks?

Sounds about right, about an hour to replace the old style filter.

Coming in late on this but read all the posts. Not mentioned is the possible use of the emmisions warranty with regard to fuel system repairs. Don't all manufacturers have to provide something like 7 years, 90,000 miles on any items that might affect emmissions?

The new filter has a pressure regulator built into it which MUST change some peformance feature of the fuel system.

I take my truck to the dealer tonight for the filter line upgrade. I am curious as to what I will be charged. Could be I get charged for a filter, could be I walk out being charged nothing. In any case it's sure to beat paying $900 for the same upgrade if I had waited till the service near 60K. I will post the results/costs.

Gilly,

I forgot my password during the server swap so to save time I just reregistered under a new username/password to gain access again. P.S. the new site layout looks good.

For what's it worth the dealer covered the total cost of the fuel filter and line upgrade on my truck yesterday under waranty. It seems to run better now. It pays to push for waranty repairs and having a copy of the TSI document was the key.
