Noisy Moonroof on '99 ML430 - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

I have a 1999 ML430. I am experiencing very loud wind noises from Moonroof when closed - to the point that on highway I have to close the screen to regain any kind of quietness.

The first time I brought it in MB claimed that the roof rack was causing the air noise. Although I didn't buy this at the time, I was a little fed up with the service center so I just said "whatever".

I would like to get this fixed. My roof rack has no cross bars i.e. it just runs parallel to the direction of travel, so I don't think this is the problem.

Before I bring the car back to MB, since I don't believe their diagostician, has anyone experienced this and what is the cause/solution?

There is a service bulletin on NOISES from that type of roof & a repair kit is avail. Bulletin AF77.20-P-1120AG & the repair kit number is 163-780-00-12

Doc,

I know this is sort of late BUT I am having some trouble finding the TSB for the roof rack that you mentioned. Should I be able to go to the dealer to get the repair kit and such? What is involved in the repair? My noise is very similar to the one originally posted, a whistling noise at freeway speeds. Thanks!!!

Well I called MBUSA about the TSB cited above and they referred me to startekinfo.com. After spending $18 on what I think is a useless site... I called my local dealer and they advised me to remove the roof rack. I did and there is no more noise. I am willing to deal with the noise during the ski season but for sunny days in CA where the sunroof open makes my drive that much more enjoyable... losing the rack is OKAY with me.
