Talking +++ another test drive +++

Went to test drive a 535is 1987 with about 140K milles.
As of now it is the most accurate discreption (on the phone) of a car.
But...he did not tell me that it had one or more loud (read clapping) valves.
It only needs ajusting, he said.
The interior was exellent and the body needed minimal work.

It was the worst test drive I have ever had!
He could not turn the engine of because one of the switches was malfonctionning, so the car had to run all the time.
Now I have to get the car going without staling at all cost!!!
I proceded to put it in reverse and started backing up but the lever was in first
and the clutch is real low, like on the floor and it as a close shifter instaled.
To make a story short, I staled the car 3 times (the car started right away), the guy was frantic, he was telling me when to shift. At one point the rpm was at 2,500 and the guy wanted me to shift , this was a real nervous dood.

Dan

No I did not buy it.
THe guy was nervous before the first stall!

But today, I cheked a very good to exellent 1973 Jaguar XJ6 automatic (real rare to find a shift on these baby).
I will call back for a test drive as soon as possible. The owner even want me to check it on a hoyst(spelling?).
The car commes with all the history of work done a workshop manual and only 62K original miles.

Jags are cool cars but I hope you like working on them. As my dad said when I was thinking about an XJ6: "Don't you ever bring home a Jag!"

Re: +++ another test drive +++

That clapping may not be valves alone. The inejctors on these cars are known to click loudly as they age, which is not a big deal as you can replace them with ford mustang injectors.
The clutch more than likely the slave or master is going bad. Did it feel squishy or hard at all? A short shift kit wont affect the clutch pedal at all, it only affects the selector rod. Did he give you a brand? UUC, z3 shifter, Blondie etc?
How did you like the sport seats?

Hey Dan...
The clapping was defenetivly the valves.
The clutch was effective near the floor and did not have much of a range to it (in or out kind of thing).
No brand name where given on the shifter but it was incredibly tight.
I liked the sport seats but did not get to relax and enjoy that ride

BTW the "test" lasted less than 5 min.

Don't take my statement in the wrong light I love Jags but I know them to well. I have grown up with my Grandparents owning Jags, they have had them all and they were all consistant, lots of problems. Although the XJ8 is better Ford has done a good job. Mercedes are built better, because Mercedes has always had more money to invest into R&D. But I love Jags they are such a nice car I will diffinitly buy one in the future.

Ok , called the "old lady" (no joke, it's an old ladys car) she has it since 1976.
***yes I know about the old lady thread*** but this old lady is taking care of this cat.

She as the history from 1985/6, because she made a clean-up (she regret having done it now) of some receipts when moving from someware west.
To summarize, after every ibernation, she had everything checked an tuned at a jaguar specialist. that is my understanding from the phone transcripts.
When something failed, she got it fix right away (looks like a ¢omfortable$ 70ish couple).

We talked price and she toled me she had a price that she would not go under, she was nice enough to tel me that price.
The price was to high and I said that I was not in the market at that price. She asked me how much I think it's value was?
Before giving the price, I explaned to the lady what I had done to arrive at that price ie; price guides, telling what category the car was in from my observation tusday etc...
She thanked me for having done the research and that she would accept my offer on monday if nothing happens during the weekend.
I still have a test drive, another inspection and a mecanical certification to do.
Lets just say that I would pay 70% on her 2004 insurance appraisial and near "dead on" from the guides.
Will give you the prices later next week........IF YOU WANT THEM

Remember this car as only 62K milles!

I hope I wont kick myself in the head in one month.......

Ho, and the repray was done on bare metal in 86 and there is not one bubble in site. Will recheck that, if/when.
