"yella-dog Democrat" is not name-calling in my opinion. Rather, its a prudent, viable political philosophy succinctly self-describing for more than a few Democrats I know.

My in-laws, for example. Good, decent, honest, conservative, God-fearing Christians are yella-dog Democrats.

My family has been so since the War of Northern Aggression.

If you've got to choose between a rotten apple you've tasted and an apple that looks and smells like it is fresh, chances are, you're not going to be ridiculed for trying the better looking/smelling apple. Do you have PROOF that it will be better? Of course not. You can only judge by what you have seen and the evidence you are able to collect. Does the nasty taste in your mouth from having tasted the rotten apple color your opinion? Sure. Not rotten is always better than rotten. Electing to choose something meerly because it is not the known bad quantity is not the american ideal, or even desireable. However, using the fact that it is not the known bad quantity as an element of the decision making process only makes good sense.

There are those who have no considered reasons for liking Kerry specifically over Bush, but if you even gave a cursory read to my original post prior to your outlash, you'd see that I am not amongst these. I even started out the entire excercise by taking war off the table to attempt a more level playing field. Given the totality of the circumstances, with even an elementary look at just simply the economy and how Bush's policies have gutted the future, it is not hard to find the Kerry platform attractive. As I said, he was not my first choice even amongst his primary contenders. But he has come to a central platform that is attractive independent of his place in history opposite Bush:

Is "Bush must be better than Not Bush" any different than the yella-dogs? No- it's not. Can we oust those in our country who make decisions in this fashion? nope. they are the majority.

It is not hard for me to imagine a candidate who could have secured the demo ticket whom I would have thought a poorer candidate for president than the incumbent. Some of the men in the primary would have produced this dynamic. I'd have been forced to keep the known quantity. I am glad that this is not the situation that saddles us today. A genuinely qualified, intelligent, and admittedly flawed human being is the nominee. He's not perfect, but he has the experience and plans to lead the country in a direction I'd rather like to see it go. I'll do what I can to see he gets his opportunity.
Yes, you gave a considered, analytical opinion (which I read and understand), prefaced by a comment that rendered the whole subsequent argument, moot.

yella-dog democrats, a term relished by some, refers to those who care not so much about the candidate in particular on the ticket, but just as long as it is a democrat. as in: "I'd vote for a yellow dog if he were on the ticket" While perhaps a term of endearment for ultra true believer demo party loyalists, it can be a term of disparagement for those who prefer to consider candidates individually. Hence, in the face of such an individual, so naming = name calling.

I cannot read your mind, hence, didn't know you would take offense. One of my best freinds, a DA in Mississippi, calls himself by taht name and is pround of it, believing that any Democrat is better than any Republican (or an other candidate) by definition.

Your comments, which led to my observation, was conmsistent with my friend's opinion.

Given all that, my friend and in-laws would be insulted that you're insulted!

So, how's a man to know what's an insult and what isn't when many folks find the term admirable?

How 'bout them "Redskins"?

Now you've gone and done it, you've just joined the offender's big leagues with that little quip.

[HJK]It's 2004 AND the US still has a team called the Redskins?!? AND, its based in a large metro area with full taxation, but no representation?!? AND, its the nation's capitol?!? WTF? [/HJK]

Wait-a-minute, that's what Kerry has on!

Oh man, "neo-condom" has great possibilities. I think you need to work that in to a letter to the editor of "The Nation". They'd probably renew your cancelled membership for you.

Nothing, apparently.

You said something was indisputable, which I disputed, proving it was disputable. Ah words, ya gotta love it when they have meaning.

True, but I was looking for more meaning than another semantics lesson so I can now dispute indisputable items freely. But I guess when that is all there is left in the tank, it is all you get. Jim
