Tom Delay and ethics

In today's Chicago Tribune (a newspaper, by the way, that has endorsed every Republican candidate for president for the past 100+ years), there was an editorial skewering Tom Delay and House Republicans for their revision of their own ethics rules. Three of Delay's associates are currently under indictment in Texas for corrupt dealings, and there is a fear that Delay may soon be indicted as well.

Heretofore, the Republican rules required the removal of any party leader from his leadership position if he were indicted for a felony that carried a penalty of 2 or more years imprisonment. Now, in a closed-door session and by secret vote, they have amended their own rules to allow such a person to continue in his leadership position while under indictment.

Delay, who goes by the nickname "The Hammer" for his heavy-handed ways, once observed: "There are two kinds of people in this country--loyal Americans and liberals."

So much for improving governmental ethics.

Try to comment on the actions of Tom Dashil that the dems always overlooked .

I want to see the dems apply the same standards to themselves they apply to the republicans....when they do then we can talk.

Why not just stick to the topic? You can always start another thread if you want to talk about Clinton or Daschle...

Don't need to talk with you. You are no more enlightened as the boneheaddoctor than you were as VirginiaDude.

I agree, GermanStar. But I don't think sticking to the topic is his forte, if you get my drift.

And your forte is making stupid inflamitory comments about the party YOU personally don't like, and get all touchy when you don't want to acknowledge your party wrote the book on dishonesty.

At least I am no brainwashed follower of the DNC........I can see things for what they are, unlike you who is bind to the actions of your chosen party.

Typical Dem response...... they are perfect and the republicans do no right. And when they have nothing to complain about you create things, Like Dan Rather did.

You never called Kerry to task on his lies and misdeads......or Tom Dashil....

or any democrat for that matter.

When you can do that...then maybe I will give what you say a little credibility.

I can critisize my party when they make a mistake, they are human, not infallible, you refuse to acknowledge your party made a lot of mistakes.

And polarised posts EXACTLY like this one are exactly what got the Open Forum shut down before inthe first place. You make a biassed jab such as this because you are unhappy your party lost and get upset when you get a like reponse.

Maybe -- maybe not, but that isn't newsworthy right now. Tom Delay is. Your tactic is analogous to defending a murderer because someone else committed murder once. It's silly -- either ignore the thread or stick to the subject. Can you defend Tom Delay or the decision the committee made without introducing unrelated material? I think this was a pretty sleazy move, since the GOP made a lot of noise about wanting to separate themselves from the low-life democrats. Apparently, it was more a matter of convenience than ethics.

I saw Tom DeLay on CSPAN last night defending the rule change. According to him, it's not a "rule" change, it's a "procedural" change. The old procedure was if a member of the Repo legislature came under indictment, that member was automatically suspended pending the outcome. The procedure has been amended so upon indictment, the case is reviewed by the steering committee. If the indictment is deemed to be "political" in nature, the member is not suspended. He inferred by this if the indictment is determined to be "not political", the suspension is invoked.

Tom DeLay is one slippery fish. He implies the indictments of his Texas collegues are politically motivated, however the DA in Texas that issued them said the only people he indicts more than Republicans are Democrats. And his record bears this out: He indicts Dems 2:1 over Reps.

Once again we have someone on the right attacking a poster personally who is posting on the issues. Another member of the bully-boy squad who thinks he has a right to f**k up a reasoned discussion because he doesn't like the opinions being offered. If there is one thing I am sick and tired of, its that. You don't like the opinions being offered, THEN THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM NOT OURS. Go to Freepers where everyone agrees with you, and stick your head up your ass over there.
