My barber, who is now deceased, had his hip done, and when they were in there, found that he had some sort of cancer...6 months later he was gone. Had nothing to do with the surgery, just odd timing.

This is getting more depressing than the political threads!!!

She is my age, just 50. She is a twin, and apparently that raises the chance of needing hip replacements.??? The first was done 2 years ago and was so successful she had the other done as soon as she could. Now she is walking (for pleasure ) again, riding horses, and generally active. Seems like a positive result.

She did take time to "get in shape" before the surgery and that seems to have helped her recovery.

Good luck, hope you heal quickly, and have a 100%+ recovery.

anybody had the partial hip replacment in which they use three small holes? is that called orthoscopic?

and what about the percentage of infections, anybody know about that?

my right one is killing me lately. so it is coming around to the front burner!

btw, yesteday started some steroid pills and the hip was virtually pain free today.

but the pills made me cranky as the pain did the day before!

My mother had one replaced and is really happy with it. Her mobility had gotten pretty bad -- she visited NYC in spring '01 and my niece pushed her around in a wheelchair cause her staying power was limited. She's says almost good as new now.

I'm sure ya'all have heard about the deals you can get in India, Singapore, etc.? One of the news shows, maybe 60 minutes, had a story about an Asian doctor with a newer design artificial hip that was getting rave reviews.

Partial replacement wasn't presented to me as an option. My Mom had a partial shoulder and it had to be re-done as a total shoulder within a month. That may have just been an incompetent surgeon, as she just had it re-done again after 5 years.

Tom, if you are looking for a less invasive procedure, check into resurfacing instead of replacement. The fellow in the bed next to mine had it done and it seemed like a nice option as you keep your existing hip and femur intact.

For what it's worth ... line up your ducks in advance. When you hip goes out, it goes real fast.

Another question you'll confront is whether to go for inpatient or outpatient rehab. My hospital actively discouraged me from getting inpatient rehab - I'm not sure why - but I think it was bad advice. And it saved my wife having to deal with me when I was just beginning recovery and was needy. Visit the rehab facilities in your area. Most are nursing homes. (Not real desireable for me.) I found a terrific rehab facility (all rehab - no "extended care" (i.e. nursing home) patients). I stayed a week, and I'm sure it was the right thing to do for me. Shop around, and if you find a good place, get in touch with them before you go in for surgery. They may hold a bed for you. (I think mine did.)

although your description does sound like a partial.

mine has really been killing me for the last month. i can get it feeling pretty good buy if i spend much time on my feet i am soon very uncomfortable. and if i sit for any length of time when i get up i it really hurts for a while then just hurts a bit less.

i am going to talk to the doc tomorrow about replacment options.
