Total Hip Replacement

Good Morning to All,

Anyone out there living with a total hip replacement? If so how is your life afterwards. What are your restrictions? Would you do it again? I guess I have waited to late to ask all these ?'s seeing that I am going in this morning at 10 pacfic time to have the surgery. Would really like to hear from anyone who has been though this as to how they are doing afterward. I have had surgery before so it does not scare me so much. This time though with the Dr putting something in and leaving it is affecting me a bit different.

Should be able to let you know by the weekend how it went.

Take care all.

My mother-in-law had total hip replacement surgery 3 years ago. She's doing great and has had no ill effects. She's 80 but leads an active life.
The biggest restriction is bending. If you bend too far in the wrong direction the ball can come out of the socket. That's a bad thing!
They will teach you proper bending techniques which will make your new hip worry free.

I have an acquaintance who lives in Denver.

He is a very active guy who is in his late seventies, but is in better shape than most guys in their late fifties.

While not a hip replacement, he had a knee replacement.

He commented that it was stiff at first, and painful to bend. The physical therapy was much harder than he expected.

However, now after a year has gone by, the new knee is perfect, he has no pain, and feels like a 10 year old.

I hope your hip replacement surgery goes as well.

Howdy Robert,
Hope things went well for you. My uncle had his knees done and after rehab is doing great. Say hi to the Bullies for me.

I had hip replacement last May,2004. No problems, no limitations, was good from day one, no pain. Would suggest that you be careful with it for at least three months, give it plenty of time to settle down, I have no doubt you will be very happy with it. I never give it a thought but be aware that it is a replacment and just take care of it.

Good Morning All,

Thanks for all the response from each of you. Today is one month since surgery. I am doing very well. Still use a walker if I am going over more than three steps. Dr.'s seem very pleased with my progress so far. Of course my hip doesn't hurt anymore since there is nothing there to hurt.. Leg was really weak but gets stronger each day.

A funny side to this is since I came home from hospital my male mini bull terrier (my deaf dog) will not leave me alone. He wants to walk between my legs and the walker which does not help me. He growls at anyone who comes to close to me. Right now he is laying across my left foot. Seems that he knows something is wrong.

My real test comes when I decide to see if I can get in and out of my SL. It was real hard with the pain before surgery. I hope it does not present any problem now as I do not want to get rid of that car.

Have a great day and do something good for someone.

Howdy Robert,
Glad it is coming along. I've been wondering how the deaf one has been doing with life in general?¿

I've reviving this thread to see if there's any new info. I'm getting my new right hip in a week.

2 specific questions:

1) How long before I'll be able to drive? (And how am I supposed to get to outpatient therapy w/o driving????) Fortunately, I have an ML which is easier on the ins and outs.

2) How difficult is the SLC going to be? I can get in and out now, but sometimes it requires some interesting gymnastics. Will it get better or worse after the replacement?

Thanks
Al

I've not had the pleasure, but among people I know who have had it done, most say it's the greatest thing going. One guy, who was 49 when he had it done, still has a residual limp and seems to be in some pain, but he's the only negituve I've heard. I have been told that knee replacement is more painful, which seems counterintiutive to me.

My father in-law had his hip replaced last year. He is doing fantastic (as far as the hip is concerned) and has no noticeable limp or limitations.

He did share one disconcerting issue with the surgery. He said his balls swelled up to the size of grapefruits. It got better after a few days.

as long as the member swells to match it would be fine.

i am looking at this perhaps this winter.

what percentage of folks get infections?

my younger brother had it done about a year ago and got a nasty infection. i probably would have had it done by now but for that.

Yeah, but by the time you're in any shape to use the swollen member, the swelling is probably gone....

Anyhow, since this is sort of a car website, any comments on when I'll be driving, and more specifically, the SLC?
