I know how to clone desktop HD (using Ghost or other program) for back up and in case of HD failure, but how does one do the same for a laptop miniHD?

How do I connect 2 mini-HD to a laptop or a desktop to duplicate? My laptop HD is making more noise than before and I suspect it will dye shortly so I need to clone it to a good and larger mini-HD.

Can you do it tho? I know that Win NT4.0 Server cannot be cloned easily but I am not sure about the later ones. Never tried that tho. Supposedly there is some sort of SID exchanger that must be used.

There's an adapter that will allow you to connect the laptop drive to a desktop machine. Got mine at CompUSA for around $20.

You can use a wireless nertwork or a firewire.

Norton Utilities offers a free download called "Ghost" for replicating a HD. The first go around took some time but after that it only changes programs that were new, or modified.

Yeah, he knows about Ghost. He's asking about a laptop to desktop connection. BTW, I use DriveImage rather than Ghost. It's a bit more intuitive and versatile, IMHO...

Rick Miley - what is the adaptor called? The one you got from CompUSA for $20. If I have that then I should be set.

Aklim - NT4 will clone just fine, I have don it several times.

I was at a class where the guy "Ghost"ed the NT4 servers and the instructor was spending a lot of time chasing down problems. He told the guy doing it that in future, if he sees a Ghosted NT4 server when he walks in, he would be walking out. AFAIK, NT4 will ghost but NT4 SERVER might have problems. Is that your experience?

Aklim - I do not know about any servers. Thank goodness I do not need to call in any pompus "experts". I did not understand "AFAIK".

AFAIK:= As Far As I Know

I thought it was something with the SID that caused problems when cloning.

I got my laptop to desktop hard drive converter at frys electronics for $6.00 they have a website but not sure if they sell it on there. www.outpost.com

The easiest cloning method would be to use 1 adapter as Rick Miley suggested and just run the Ghost imaging to make a .gho file of the old drive, and then plug in the new drive and copy the image back. It might be a good idea to keep a .gho image of your machine in the event that something goes wrong when booting the new drive. I presume you're not using NT 4.0 in this case since it's a notebook and so therefore you shouldn't have a problem if you're running Windows 2000 or XP.

But wouldn't 2000 or XP still have issues with the SID?

I cloned...umm 40 plus machines using windows 2000 and didn't have any problems. They were all identical Dell desktops but the notebook situation shouldn't change anything. I guess it depends on the OS. Did I miss which OS we're moving here?
