Angry Can the state of MD actually screw me this bad?

Just got a notice of tax assessment from the state of Maryland.

Get this:

account year: 2002
tax liability: $.51 (yes, that's 51 cents)
interest: $74.96
penalty: $.05
balance due: $75.52

Yes, that's $75.52 because I still owe the state 51 lousy cents!!

Are they for real?

I'll be calling my tax guy in the morning.

Thanks, Maryland, for ruining an otherwise nice day. Just one of many reasons why I'll never live in that state.

Wow.

Maybe the interest and penalty lines got swapped? I would think that even the government would have to follow standard accounting practices when calculating interest...

Yeah, I will appeal. Seems like automated penalties out of control. If an actual person presided over things like this, I doubt it'd come to this.

Loan sharks would be prosecuted for charging a mere fraction of that rate.....\

Funny, what was this assesment on? I seem to remember most taxes rouinded to the nearest dollar when I lived in the Peoples Republik of MD

The car tax was on its way out, but then a big spending democrat was elected governor.

(To be fair, the previous rep. gov. spent a lot of money too.)

PS: You Va guys, are they ever going to get rid of that car property tax? I was under the assumption they did, but when I arrived in VA last week, my sis in law said she payed close to $1000 on her new E.

Now you see why I don't own a new car...................

Since you no longer live in that state, why not just send them a polite letter instructing them to "Eat my shorts" ? They aren't going to come looking for you for such a small amount, they are just simply fishing for guppies.

Well, we have a Republican Governor in Georgia...doesn't matter. We still pay "ad valorem" taxes each year on personal property, depending on the county you live in. Mine is about a grand for the CLK and the CE.

Its not about who is governer....as its not a dictatorship.....blame the state senate and congress...they are the ones who waste all the tax dollars....and figure they are entitled to 110% of what you earn.

Haven't you heard? -- Maryland is the most corrupted state in the Union. Just check out those good 'ole boys in Annapolis at lunch time and you will understand why

And oh, somebody has to pay for their 56' sail boats.

Angry

Think that's bad? Most homeowners associations can take your house, and sell it for back dues. Seen it happen, mostly to older people.

One of the many reasons I looked for a house that was in an area without a homeowners association.......

I always hated those things....always run by people with a Napoleon Complex........never fails.
