Another reason to quit smoking

Peter Jennings has lung cancer. He quit a while ago, but even if one quits, they're still in danger of getting cancer. I hope he recovers quickly.

Smoking also constricts your blood vessels, and raises your blood pressure. Smokers are more likely to have a heart attack than non-smokers. Why pay a mutinational conglomerate for the privilege of making you sick? I did it for 20 years, what a waste.

My wife has smoked since age 16, and she's 60 now. So far so good, but she knows the risks and I don't bug her about it. Seems to be in very good health yet and is hardly ever sick. She's actually afraid to quit, as she has heard that people who have smoked as long as she can take an immediate turn for the worse when they quit. Some people can smoke till they're 90,,,,, maybe she's one of them. She doesn't bug me about the beer so we're even.

If you didn't enjoy smoking why did you start or even if you did start, continue it? I bought a Jetski. After a bit, I found that I didn't enjoy it as much and so I stopped riding it and sold it. My wife's instructor is much more qualified than she and I put together as far as medical stuff goes. She smokes like a chimney and told us that she does enjoy her smoke which is why she does it. Bottom line is that I have yet to meet a smoker who hates it.

When I make coffee and you drink it, be prepared to shave your gums. I take 2 and some change of fine ground coffee to make a cup. Then I add enough sugar that if it gets cooler, the sugar comes out. Then to top it off, I add half and half. All of that and it doesn't come close to satisfying me when I am out of Coke. Crapsi or Mt Dew or Jolt doesn't do it for me. I need a Coke. Nothing is as satisfying. OTOH, I used to smoke with a colleague of mine when we exchanged shifts and he became a pack a day man and when I broke my leg, i stopped because it might impare my healing. I smoke whenever I want to or at least if the company is smoking. Take it or leave it. Not hooked.

Quite frankly, it all depends on your dispositions. My Grandfather smoked for over 70 years (the non filtered ones) and it did not affect him. He died at the rip old age of 92. BTW, he was also a drinker (cognac) as well.

I quit smoking years ago. Since then I've gotten rid of 99% of my other unhealthy habits and also get regular aerobic exercise. Most recently I cut my daily coffee consumption of between 6 to 8 cups down to 2. It really made for an improvement. I reduced by 2 cups per day, had a head ache the 3rd day and was past it. Now I sleep better and am not feeling irritable later in the day.

The combination of sugar or sugars and caffeine is pretty good fix. The heart responds to sugar seconds after ingestion, and fades almost as quickly while caffeine hits the system a little slower but lingers. If you get a heart rate monitor, strap it on just after you get outtta bed and monitor your pulse while you’re drinking coke, or even a non caffeinated but sugar rich drink you can observe the quick increase of your heart rate shortly after a drink. Smoking a cig is even more dramatic. Tools which provide feedback about what’s happening can go a long way to help eliminate an over use of something.

My uncle lived until 92 and he too smoke and drank. Of course his brothers, sister, and parents all died at much earlier ages and they too drank and smoked. I guess if you want to look at what happens rarely rather than what happens most of the time, its all okay...............

Anyone here read "Pearls before Swine"?

http://www.comics.com/comics/pearls/archive/pearls-20050403.html

I know what the stuff does to the body. Pretty much anything that is good sucks and anything that gives the body a pleasurable sensation is bad for you. I figure that if I go on to say 65 having had all I want to eat, drink, etc, etc, I'll go happy. I don't see the point of a long life of missing out on all the good stuff after all, why prolong it past my useful life.

Hmmmm. Definite no-brainer. Were I given a choice of living the life of a couch potato or being dead, I’d choose dead.

Speaking of couch potatoes, I recently saw a new definition of having no life: a full grown middle aged guy who camped out over night on the sidewalk by the stadium to be among first in line to buy tickets to a ball game. Gosh what an exciting thing to get to look foreword to.....

What is worthwhile? A Philosophy course in Ethics is a study of this question.

I suppose that is up to you as far as what is worthwhile. I don't think life in a wheelchair is worthwhile to me. As such, I have specified in my living will that I am not prepared to accept disability. If i had an injury where I would be permanently disabled like that, I would rather they not bother to wake me up, give me comfort measures and let me die. However, as they say on the net, YMMV. You might think that life is still worth living, albeit in a wheelchair. I might disagree with you. So, I would say it is ultimately up to you to decide.

Not yet but if I lived long enough, it will come. Hopefully by then I'll be in my 60s and ready to go whenever it gets to be too much of an issue
