Costco is using Nitrogen in tires.....

Anyone ever hear of this before?

They claim it leaks slower and doesn't get as hot as air does, leading to higher safety.

I bough 4 new tires yesterday for one of my vans and the tire dude told me.

Wouldn't nitrogen be more costly that air?

Air is after all, free.

We use it in aircraft tires, but I don't see the relevance in in automobile tire.

Nitrogen molecules are larger and won't leak through the tire, bead, etc. like good old air. If available I would opt for it. Someone running cheap tires probably wouldn't be interested. Just another way to protect your investment.

It makes no sense to pay for Nitrogen in a car tire...your tire will die from outside contaminants long before the inside has issues.....

If there's no charge, then sure, that's a cool idea! I wouldn't pay for it, though.

Costco entices with nitrogen
Aftermarket Business, Dec, 2004 by Chris Miller
new

Costco has banked on an airy proposition with its tire service customers to gain market share: free nitrogen. Nitrogen is said to prolong tire and wheel life, improve gas mileage and keep tires inflated longer than those with compressed air.

A purveyor of a number of items, from wine and jewelry to electronics and caskets, Costco started installing nitrogen equipment last summer and achieved full implementation in its approximately 400 U.S. and Canadian tire centers in the fall, says Robert Moyer, Costco's tire director of North America sales and services.

The move is part of a larger culture of "nitrogen awareness," which involves targeting the consumer with education and services regarding nitrogen's benefits as a tire filling. Though the cost of nitrogen is typically pricey ($3 to $5 per tire), Costco is offering its nitrogen amenities free with tire purchase and provides fill-ups for the life of the tire, according to Moyer. He says the cost of the generators, provided by Branick Industries in Fargo, N.D., can be recouped in the market share the company stands to gain. "We consider equipment improvements the cost of doing business."

Tires originally filled with nitrogen also can be topped off with traditional compressed air, which is about 80 percent nitrogen and 20 percent oxygen, and Costco will replenish the nitrogen level, according to a company brochure.

Costco Tire Centers has been using nitrogen here in Hawaii and putting the green valve caps for about a year out here in the islands. With more cars having onboad tire pressure monitoring systems, I wonder if tire makers are doing anything to minimize changes so that owners don't freak from seeing their psi change.

My father in law filled his Altima's tires with nitrogen at Costco and they seem to leak as much as before. He must have some other kind of problem. Meanwhile I have been using regular air in my tires for years and I check the pressure regularly and I rarely have to adjust it. I would think that air pressure problems in tires would be much more likely to occur for other reasons than those pesky little air molecules escaping through the sidewall. And think about it, at $3-$5 a tire it wouldn't take much to spend as much on that as it would cost to pick up a copy of "The Simple Life" on DVD (also available at Costco).

I look at paying that much for air in you tires as I do fancy bottled water or Starbucks..

You have far better things to throw away money on than that.
