I smoked off and on for about ten - fifteen years, never real heavy, but once you fall into it, it's easy to go back when you're around other smokers, specially at a Rainbow Gathering or some campout where people roll a tobaccy cig and pass it around like a J. There's something that seems right about it at moments like that.

Thank God I quit though....ceptin' a wee bit of whacky tobaccy now and then.

It's sad, but when I went to ABC's site to read about Peter's passing I also checked the comments left by visitors to the site. Though most of the comments were respectful, there were those that were somewhat less so.

I never would have thought that a community such as MercedesShop would have member that are classless enough to spit on the grave of the recently departed for no other reason than differing political opinions. Sadly, i have been proven wrong.

Yes, Peter Jennings was a Canadian and his views were somewhat more liberal; but America is made up of more than just those square states in the middle. There are liberals in America too. And for the record, being somewhat socialist does NOT mean that one supports socialism as it was known under the USSR. But i digress.

He used his position and influence to try to bring news from around the world to the American people. Fitting since the name of his broadcast was WORLD News Nightly.

Yes, he was a high school dropout. Something that he, by all accounts, regrets. Nevertheless, he educated himself to the point where Barbara Walters has said numerous times that his knowledge often surprised her.

But this thread isn't about Peter's accomplishments...it's about the loss of someone who conducted himself with a great deal of poise and class regardless of the circumstances (9/11 broadcast). It's about the loss of someone who, regardless of his lack of formal education, was able to report the most complex events and have it MAKE SENSE to those who didn't have the benefit of knowing the entire backstory. It's about the loss of someone whose finer points (and there are many) we should all aspire to emulate in some small way.

And this post is about my disgust at the narrow-minded, classless, fools who see fit to spew their vitriol here. For example:

If you like the dead so much, why not join them? I, for one, would waste no time in missing your presence. But that would hardly be fair to the poor souls in the afterlife that would be subjected to an eternity of having to endure you. I guess that's why they call it hell.
