Let's not forget

I hope this does not sound cruel or demeaning to anyone. With all the talks about saving countless of hurricane and flooded victims, please let no one forget to donate to save the animals as well. I know a lot of our members are dog lovers. I was watch the news the other night and saw a dog was stranded on the porch and the rescue worker in the boat just ignored it. I also saw rescue workers picked up people stranded on the roof top but left the family's pet behind. I know saving human lifes is important, but just becasue they are animals and they don't deserve to die such an agonizing death as starvation and thirst. Please make an effort to save the animals as their lives are just as precious.

With all the deaths and destructions around us, it's easy to forget the little fur babies that bring us so much joy when time is good. Please make an effort not to let these little guys suffer.

Yea, I've seem stories about some people having to leave their pets behind, I don't think I could do it. My dogs sleep at the foot of our bed and are part of the family, we don't go anywhere without them.

I was going to say something mean and flippant just to illicit a reaction from Elau, but I realized that pets are like family members for some. So I've redacted my post.

Disaster and Relief Shelters will not take pets.

My bug out bags and emergency supplies contain food and other dog related items.

My dog would stay with me till the end. It may seem silly to some but my dog is family. He has on two occasions stood his ground to protect me, I would do the same.

Our black lab has already sent his "treat allowance" to the relief effort for animal rescue and maintenance via the ASPCA hurricane relief link on Animal Planet.

I saw LOTS of abandoned dogs standing on rooftops. We tried coaxing a few into the boat but they were too terrified and would probably have bitten us in fear. They were beginning to die of exposure and starvation.

People first. Then human bodies. Then animals. I understand they began recovering bodies today. What an absolutely horrible, ghastly chore. I don't think I could do it. There was plenty of opportunity.

Howdy All,
Different organizations for different jobs. Red cross and other orgs. handle people. The dog orgs. have the know-how and equipement to handle animals. As Bot said he wanted to pick up some dogs but was worried about being bit. Putting an out of control animal in a boat with people could put everyone at risk. The people that do the animal rescue have the same feelings for animals as some of the people on this forum, that is why they are there. Just need more of them.

I should mention that they (animal rescue) have been on the job all week. Their chopper wrecked on take-off so their efforts have been slowed (pilot and passenger are okay). Also, the area I worked was a high-risk part of the city. We had heavily armed escorts and there were several murders in the area. Some of the dogs were BMF's, like Staffordshires but with tremendous heads and bigger bodies.

Howdy Bot,
Those kind of dogs make people think twice about a rescue attempt. Another train of thought by many people is that animals can fend for themselves better than most people. Some animals can and some can't. Just like people. I know one thing. You won't see any animals looting the tv store.

Actually the animals have proven to deserve help far more than a large number of residents in that area have. Mostly the ones hauling off TV's and stereos while looting "survivale basics" or terrorizing neighborhoods at gunpoint or setting those fires.
