The microsoft links do not seem like the same problem i have. I also clean out my cooling fans once every 4-6 months, i learned that from the first cooling fan that went out on me. The way this one is set up you also have acess to the processor and the heat sink with the same bottom cover. I also clean out the heatsink at the same time as it gets clogged with dust very easily. I doubt the overheating issues because it has not done it since i un-installed Norton, and previously it did not matter how long the computer had been on for. At this point i'm going to consider the problem fixed until it happens again. I fear it probably will though, as last time it started this it stopped on its own for about a week too.

It's backup and reinstall time. The machine will run faster and that way you can eliminate most of the software issues at the same time assuming the system hardware is acting normally.

Not so expensive as you may think.... You can get the smallest iBook G4 for around $1,200 brand new. Great little computers, no headaches, never crashes, very little concern about viruses, etc....

typically overheating will cause this problem the system shuts off to prevent damage to the cpu and or other components that are getting too hot.

If it seems to have been fixed since you uninstalled norton it is possible norton was making the cpu work hard thus heating it up more.

You may want to try to find some kind of computer burn in testing software. it will put a heavy load on the system, and if it shuts off then you can assume it is heat.

you can look into one of those cooling fan pads that connect via usb to the computer or to a wall socket that sit under your laptop blowing air at the bottom of the laptop.

Another thing to consider is where you use it. if it is sitting on your bed, on the comforter, the comforter could be blocking the openings for air to be pulled in and or sent out of the computer, thus heating it up more.

If removing norton fixed the problem, look for another antivirus program to use.

Also have you been using microsoft antispyware or adaware, or spybot at all to keep the system clean from those annoying items?

Well, as i figured i spoke too soon. The computer shut off on me again today. It also seems to be operating much slower than it used to even a week ago. Does anyone else recognize the symptoms of another computer crash?? i know i do.... Now i just have to be smart and back everything up in time before it totally lets go on me again. That PSP plan from best buy has turned into the greatest thing i've ever invested in. Maybe this time they will just give me a new computer.....

Actually, it sounds like what an old Gateway laptop I used to have started doing, right before the hard drive died on me. Back up your important documents, data, address books, etc. NOW!... There are companies that can recover data from "deceased" hard drives, but it is mucho-$$$$$!

I just downloaded and tried to run one of those burn in programs. I tried to get the computer through it 3 times, it turned off every single one of them. I also tried it with and without the RAM that I recently installed, no change. Looks like its an overheating issue afterall. Its gonna suck to be without a computer for a month again...
