With the lower pressures of the 1.6 gal flushes, gravity is a big factor for the unpressurized tanks. The upstairs toilets do just fine, while the one downstairs unit has required some "assistance" at times...via a plunger.

If your household has an "Al Bundy", you definitely need to get the pressurized ones (like the brand "Toto"). Sounds like a jet taking off when it flushes...not convenient if folks in your house are middle-of-the-night users...

One thing reproduction has taught me is that there is no correlation between body size and fitness for employment as a toilet tester. Ever since my daughter has been out of diapers, she has produced objects worthy of awe, or dread (if you happen to be a plumber).

When mine was IN diapers, (I was the designated changer) I was floored at the baseball-sized turds that kid would extrude...wondered why I never heard any screaming while she was in process...

Well..........I'm not fully in agreement........until we get confirmation from Shaq.

Many times the tanks are modified to reduce the flow to 1.6 gallons. Some have a plastic cylinder around the outlet that only lets that cylinder of water flow out. You can modify that cylinder by punching some holes near the bottom.

Some have a plastic float on the chain so that the flapper drops down early. You can remove the float and get the full tank volume.

I've got the plastic float.........self installed. Sometimes you use the reduced gallonage available from the plastic float..........sometimes you hold the lever down and get the full tank volume.........depending........

Toto toilets . . . one flush, no stoppage.

My GF just got a Toto (luck thing, for free!!) Can I just tell you, it feels like you are sitting in the hand of God when you're in that thing. And the soft-close cover. Sweet.

Never would have thought we could get 22 posts out of a toilet drain.

A word of warning. Back in 1974 I cut an article out of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle concerning a homeowner in Sodus, NY. He had installed his own plumbing, including the toilet and failed to vent his system. The town of Sodus periodically flushed the sewer system with a water jet. The article recounts the man's final moments of thought as he was peacefully emptying his bowels in the quiet of his own home, contemplating his plumbing successes. He wondered why he was hearing the sound of rushing jets. Before he had time to realize the implications of the chapter on 'venting' , he was forcefully ejected off his throne with a violent eruption of sewage and air, blasting him out of the bathroom and into the annals of poor plumbing examples.

Yep.....me too.......I can only imagine the volume of water that headed out of that closet..........what a cleanup job.

This is definitely one thread that is bettor off WITHOUT photos.....

By the way, anyone know where I can get rope oakum? I need to work on our drain system.
