I found the link for Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums of all time.

The Joshua Tree is #26, not too bad I guess.

I'm awfully impressed that Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" was #6.

It also ocurred to me that most Americans are probably surprised that the Beach Boy's Pet Sounds is #2. I took a History of Rock and Roll in college to satisfy one of the prerequisites for a liberal arts course, thinking it would be easy, but it was a really, really hard course.

In any event, the teacher took a lot of time discussing Pet Sounds, and how revolutionary it was. I remember that it was Brian Wilson's response to listening to Rubber Soul, and it inspired The Beatles to create Sgt. Peppers.

It was my teacher's opinion that it was the greatest album of all time, but at #2, I guess you can't complain.

I just noticed that not one Led Zeppelin album made it in the top 10.

Their highest rated album is their first album, in at #29.

Michael Jackson's Thriller is higher at #20.

That's just wrong.

The Carpenter's "Close To You" shows up at #175.

Ranks higher than AC / DC's "Highway to Hell" at 199.

That Rolling Stone 'list' is as sublime example of the unrelenting insistence of expression from the editor's apparently insatiable ego and is worth about as much as the opinion of a preschooler on the issue of global warming.

I love how they rank Nirvana consistently high for some perceived cred from anyone under the age of 30 reading that list.

Nirvana better than Led Zeppelin? Exactly.

Critics are idiots. I maintain they are all failed artists at some level.

A British magazine called NME - the New Musical Express - has been running for about as long as Rolling Stone, maybe longer. They did a comparison a while back that was particularily telling. They looked at reviews they did back when a certain album came out compared to its current level in their current "Top 100" list. [EDIT - Actually, now that I think about it, it may have been Q Magazine, can't remember...point is the same though].

Albums like the Sex Pistol's 'Never Mind the Bollocks...' had been given scathing reviews when they first came out, only to land in the Top 10 over the years. This trend was observed more often than not and really begs the question - What good is a review anyway?

I agree.

"Critics" are, more often than not, frustrated, jealous, and/or failed musicians pretending to be "expert writers/reviewers". Their opinions should always be viewed with great skepticism, and should mean no more or no less than anyone else's.

Along those lines.... Rolling Stone magazine has COMPLETELY f***ing lost it... So VERY out-of-touch and irrelevant.

A year or two ago, they put out a "greatest guitar players" issue, and they had guys like Kurt Cobain and that Jack guy from the White Stripes ranked far ABOVE Eddie Van Halen?!?!?!?!.....

Sacrilege... not to mention just plain STUPID.

That was the last time I ever picked up a Rolling Stone magazine.

Nirvana sucks, I could never figure out why received the accolades they did. Pearl Jam is wayyyyyyyy better IMO.

Actually I think they were a great band, but when it comes to guitar skills, Kurt was certainly lacking.... and OBVIOUSLY should not be ranked higher than Edward Van Halen on a "guitar greats" list. That is just WRONG, by ANY standard.

Dave Grohl (Nirvana's drummer) was actually the strongest member of that band... He wrote a lot of the music, was a slammin' drummer, sang backup vocals, and has gone on to write, sing, and play guitar in his band "Foo Fighters". They are a great rock band as well. Also, he has played drums on records by Queens of the Stone Age, Nine Inch Nails, etc.... He's all over the place, and deservedly so!

I remember when insane Cobain decorated his attic with brain matter and the Rock-n-Roll press equated him with John Lennon.....I do agree with you that he sucked as a guitarist comparing him to Eddie Van Halen is like comparing me to you on the drums since I can barely tap a fight song on the steering wheel.

but again I thought and still do think that Nirvana sucked they had some good riffs that prompted some good head banging but I would never put them ahead of almost any band. I guess when Punk/Grunge went mainstream I felt ripped off and conformist.

One thing notable about the Clash is that they did not imitate anyone it was a truly unique band. Wasn't your old Double Drive guitarist a big clash fan?

I enjoyed Nirvana, but they were FAR from being the best band from the "Sattle/grunge" era.

Alice in Chains... Goofy name for a band, but they were GREAT. The singer was an idiot and OD'ed on heroin, but he had serious pipes back in the day, and great songs... Some friends of mine have been playing with the guitarist, Jerry Cantrell, lately, on his solo stuff.

Soundgarden... A PHENOMENAL band... One of my favorites, period. They were a modern Black Sabbath, with a BETTER singer. Chris Cornell (now in the band Audioslave with former members of Rage Against the Machine) has one of the best voices in rock and roll, ever.

Pearl Jam was good, but Eddie Vedder gets annoying pretty quickly.

Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, and Mother Love Bone all get honorable mention.

Several guys from several of those Seattle bands got together and did a tribute album to the singer of Mother Love Bone when he died (drugs again, big surprise!).... They called it Temple of the Dog, and it was simply an amazing album.... A lot of it is on the "mellower" side of grunge (hahaha....), and it is definitely one worth seeking out. Seriously. It's a very good rock record.

Actually, it was my old bassist, Josh, who was way into the Clash. He grew up in Los Angeles, listening to the Clash, X, Sex Pistols, Black Flag, Fishbone, Jane's Addiction.... He's an old-school punk rocker. And a damn fine bass player.

Eddie is still amazing technically, always will be.... And Alex is one of my all-time rock drumming heroes....

But Van Halen has lost a LOT of steam in the songwriting department... The album they did with that Gary Cheroney guy (ex-Extreme singer) was TERRIBLE.

They need to either re-unite with Dave, or hang it up.

Word is starting to spread that the Clash is reuniting and the lead singer of Rancid is going to take Strummers lead. The first concert is going to be at Hyde Park music festival and a full tour will start in 9 months.

Ohhhhh baby!

Wow. Not sure how I feel about this one. Did some checking, seems the rumor hit last October. Not sure where it stands now? That Rancid guy certainly would love the job. I remember first seeing the video for the Rancid tune "Time Bomb" several years ago and all I could think of was "Man, this guy is really into his Clash"....

He could certainly play the part - but that's what it would be. The Clash with a guest singer playing Joe's part. It would still be a great show but...I dunno. You just can't ever replace that kind of fire.
