Ah the wonderful month of May. The chill of winter behind and the swelter of summer just around the corner. Meanwhile flowers bloom, birds twitter and our government continues to be unable to cope with the agressive failures it created. Yes, indeed we are here.

Ah, but that is the great unknown at this time. Some plans that have been tossed about would lead one to believe several rungs could be attained in one fell swoop. Other plans make each successive rung that much harder.

Right now, the current administration has a little unwritten rule...for the next position higher (and all above that) they are requiring HQ time in DC, not detail time but hard time on the ground. Not my cup-o-tea. I did interview a week and a half ago, I'm sure the selection has been made and the name is being vetted. Maybe we'll find out by weeks end. My closest competitor (my book) has 6 years HQ time, while I have experience actually running a post. I guess it all boils down to who the guy with all the stars wants .

That realization back about 8 years ago is what slammed shut my career path and in all honesty, f**k'em. I like what I do, I get some great toys, and am appropriately (if not abundantly) compensated.

In my agency the HQ folks are lobotomized at the 12-15 layer (field folks in the 12-15 layer [ahem] are closer to normal). I don't know how they do that, it's like that old movie where they switch CO for nitrous oxide in the operating room. They go in normal and come out as zombie organ donors.

But if you don't take the blue pill (mixing movie metaphors) you'll go nowhere in mgmt. For me, I realized that I prefer the sci-tech to the admin so I took the red pill and live out of the power loop. It's a good life. I think if I had entered service at an earlier age (I entered in my 40's) that I would have gone the other way. Priorities change with age and experience.

It's the time of the year for alergy and lawnmower threads.

Speaking of... would water cooling a lawn mower make it quieter?

Not to hijack a thread for a sub-topic, but...

It's hard to say where the lobotomy line is drawn for us, seems to me to start at the 14 level. Unless it is regarding the blue pill group. Seems they hit the lobotomy room much earlier, and subsequently float much higher in the bowl. I, on the other hand, am proof that you can be knocking on the 14 door without prostituting one's beliefs. Although I will admit it is a much slower journey.

That and having the nads to tell the guy with all the stars he is wrong. Definitely slows the career path, but it does make you feel good inside (especially when they're forced to admit).
