For me, the w123- thats all I remember seeing with the 3 pointed star as a child in the mid-late 80's. When i think mercedes, or her the word, a medium royal blue 300D Turbo with tan pin stripes comes to mind immediately- my neighbor had bought one new when i was a child.

I also think of cream mid 80's SL's.

Then theres the W126 of course.

W198 to most of the population, or a W126. I love my W123 but the 126 is definetly most identifiable by the commoner.

For public at large, W123, W126, Gullwing, pagoda but...

Would have to say for me personally would be a clean white W123 sedan

Simple, stately, elegant, unpretentious, having all those hidden virtues of safety, durability, timeless classic good looks, class, all controls logically placed, easy to repair, spares always available, the model seen everywhere all over the world, ageless....

If it was a woman, it would be Jackie Kennedy, in a white sleeveless sheath by Oleg Cassini, about 1962 when she was at the top of her game

mmmmmm

Thanks for the list of 123 virtues. My wife and I always look at our 123, smile and say things like: “There’s just something about it.”
You’ve covered that something well. Thanks.

Most people I've met that are not familiar with Mercedes cannot tell the difference between a W201, W202, W124, and W140...the "look" from these models pretty much define Mercedes...the newer models seem to lack a general unifying theme...

Jim, I just finished reading your description of the W123. I am going to have to take a cold shower!

PS I agree with your description. Except mine would have to be Havana Brown (of course) and there would have to be a 230SL, 250SL or a 280SL, in Tiffany Blue, parked right next to it. For me that would be like having Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn waiting for me in my driveway. OK, back to the cold shower.

W123, W124 or W126.

What I find interesting about my W124 nowadays is how much the hard lines really stand out in the crowd. Those angled slopes and cuts are so different from all the bulbous and smooth curves of new model cars in general.

Have you looked at a new Caddy lately? They have more lines and sharp angles than the stealth bomber.
