support for congo rape victims.

I've read this horrifying story and wanted to pass it on to others so that everyone could help. kindly pass on to those you know so we can help as much as we can.
This is from [url]http://www.cnn.com/]

Congo rape victims -- how to help
After watching Jeff Koinange's story , http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/africa/05/23/koinange.rape.war/index.html, about the use of rape as a weapon of war in the Congo, many of you are probably wondering how you can help. Here are two organizations working in the Congo that accept donations:

The Swedish Pentecostal Mission- PMU
Contact person: Marie Walterzon
Tel in Congo (243)-81-318-6246

TEARFUND- A British NGO
Contact person: Tilly Leuring
Tel in Congo: (243)-997-089-850

First reported last year by several news organizations and swept under the rug. Why? I don't know.

I'm also interested in chattel slavery which is also present in Africa and getting little play in thepress. Why? I don't know.

Something about Mogudishu comes to mind.

Oh yeah now I remember: when we tried to help, the local population set about to kill Americans. That's a hint, ins't it?

This opens a marvelous opportunity for other nations to become involved. Maybe even a really earnest vote in the UN would help.

The situation in the Congo is disgraceful and has been since Patrice Lumumba was assassinated in the 60's.

If you want to see something disturbing and interesting, look up the full assumed name of Mobutu Sese Seko, the former dictator there, and its meaning. What a nutcase!

It's real sad to see those people suffer.

First there poor as dirt, then they can't sleep without bullets flying over there heads.

They have huge fresh water issues.

Oh, and it seems like the rape is incesssant.

Like Bruce Willis said in "tears of the sun" whikle observing another atrocity.

A local said, "God help us"

Willis replied, "God left Africa a long time ago"

Sad!

Plantman,
Perhaps we have become so accustomed to life with peace and quiet that we have neglected the traumas that others in the rest of the world are going through.

I wonder what we can do to help...

Mobutu was a disgrace to the human race, from what I can tell at this distance.

Wall St. J. reporter Jonathan Kwitny's book, "Endless Enemies: the Making of an Unfriendly World" has some amazing tales of corruption and folly in Zaire, aided and abetted by multinational sharks on the take.

Bloody unbelievable.

I think he might be referring to severed hands. Heart of darkness indeed.

People always say charity begins at home, and that has a lot to do with people not paying attention as much to places like Africa, Haiti, etc.....

Addtionally, there is so much corruption in those countries that if you do decide to offer some sort of financial help, what are the chances that it gets to the proper places?

Wait a minute how about a global organization.....lets' call it the United Nations.

ooops! we already have one of those. Do they do anything besides occupy space in some of the best real estate markets in the world?

Or are they that spread out that they are useless.

Or is their role not clearly defined?

I remember in the movie "Hotel Rwanda" where they existed in a peace keeping capacity and they were not even allowed to draw fire while the rebels were massacring women and children without fear of reprisals...

I don't think anyone has answered Medmech's question yet. Bot seemed to hint at it, but left it unfulfilled.

I'm curious to see what the answer is.
